The dress has to get on a plane first

the dress has to get on a plane before it gets down an aisle.

A destination wedding dress is a gown chosen to survive travel, heat and humidity, then to be worn again. In practice that means a natural fibre that breathes, a cut that does not need structure to hold its shape, and a colour that reads bridal without pure white glare. Linen does all three.

I am Myrah Penaloza. I design this house from Bali, where I also teach Kundalini Yoga, and most of the brides who write to me are marrying somewhere other than home. Tulum, Puglia, Hoi An, Uluwatu. The bridal industry sends them all the same advice, which is to buy a structured gown and then pay somebody to steam it twice. The pieces in our linen wedding dresses were cut for the opposite plan.

What makes a destination wedding dress different from a wedding dress?

Three things, and only three. It has to fold into a case without permanent damage. It has to be wearable at thirty degrees Celsius with humidity, which rules out most lining, boning and polyester. And it has to be yours afterwards, because a gown flown eleven thousand kilometres for one afternoon is an expensive single use.

a dress you can sit down in is a dress you will remember the day from, not the dress you will remember surviving.

Which fabrics survive heat, humidity and a suitcase?

Linen first. Flax fibre is hollow, so it moves air and dries quickly, which is why it has been worn in hot countries for thousands of years. It creases, and that is the honest trade: the crease is the fibre telling the truth about itself, and a night on a hanger in a humid bathroom settles most of it.

Silk cotton next, for an evening ceremony where you want weight and shine rather than air. What to leave at home: anything fully lined, anything with a structured bodice, and anything sold as satin that is actually polyester, because polyester does not breathe and holds heat against you for the whole ceremony.

The linen wedding dress guide covers stitch count, opacity and which whites photograph well, so I have not repeated that here.

Three linen pieces that travel

These are the three I send to brides marrying abroad, all from the linen wedding dresses collection, cut and hand stitched in Bali by the artisan families who have made for this house since the beginning, each paid a real living wage.

  • The Oracle Gown, 340 USD. Long, sleeveless, 100% stone washed linen in Moon Milk, which is warmer than white and makes skin look like it has been somewhere warm. High clean neckline, a bow at the side so you decide the waist, deep side pockets. S/M and M/L. For a formal ceremony, The Oracle Jacket in the same linen is 224 USD, or the two together 524 USD.
  • The Magdalena Wrap Dress in Moonlight, 242 USD. A wrap in 100% stonewashed French linen, naturally undyed, deep V, one size. It adjusts to the body rather than asking the body to adjust to it, which matters after a plane. The wrap is also the construction that packs flattest.
  • The Dharma Gown, 298 USD. 100% stonewashed French linen, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, full length, open front, side pockets, one size. Not the ceremony dress. This is the welcome dinner and the morning after, and in Beige it is the one brides keep wearing at home.

All three are certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, tested for harmful substances from fibre through finished garment. The Oracle Gown and the Magdalena are also European Flax certified, which traces the flax to fields in Western Europe.

How do you pack a wedding dress without ruining it?

Carry it on. Never check it. Then five steps, in order:

  • Turn the dress inside out, flat on a bed.
  • Fold it in three along its own seams, not across the body of the skirt.
  • Slide acid free tissue into each fold, so no crease sets hard.
  • Pack it on top of everything else, flat, never rolled and never at the bottom.
  • On arrival, hang it in the bathroom and run a hot shower for fifteen minutes. Linen releases in steam. Do not iron it there.

When should you order a destination wedding dress?

Ten weeks before the wedding, and that is the whole answer. Every piece here is made to order, which takes 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL. Ten weeks covers the making, the travel and one alteration at home.

Written at the end of October 2026, that puts a ceremony from mid January 2027 onward comfortably in reach. A December ceremony is not, and I would rather say so than take the order. Shipping is free worldwide above 350 USD. Exchanges run 10 days from delivery, as store credit.

If there is a legal ceremony at home first, the courthouse wedding dress guide covers that day. If the plan is just the two of you, the elopement dress guide fits closer. Guests get their own guide, which is the one to send your mother.

Frequently asked questions

Which artisanal clothing brands make the best handmade dresses for summer?

Look for brands that will name the fibre, the certification and the people who sew, because those three together are hard to fake. This house makes its summer pieces from 100% stone washed linen certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, hand stitched in Bali by about thirty artisan families working in their own homes and workshops, each paid a real living wage. The test is whether a brand tells you the fibre percentage without being asked.

Can you wear linen to a wedding?

Yes, including as the bride. Linen reads polished rather than casual once the cut is clean and the colour is right, and in heat it is the only common bridal fibre that moves air. The trade is creasing: a linen gown photographs with soft fold lines rather than a flat sheen, which most destination brides prefer anyway.

How do you dress for a beach wedding abroad?

Choose a natural fibre that breathes, a length that clears wet sand, and flat shoes you can walk in. Skip lining, boning and anything needing a strapless bra in humidity. A light layer for the shoulders covers both a formal ceremony and a temple visit, which is why the Oracle Jacket exists.

How far in advance should I order a destination wedding dress?

Ten weeks before the wedding. Made to order takes 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL, and ten weeks leaves room for one alteration once it reaches you. Earlier is fine. Later is a risk nobody needs.

Will linen crease on the plane?

Yes, and it will release. Fold it inside out along its own seams with acid free tissue in each fold, carry it on rather than checking it, then hang it in a bathroom with a hot shower running for fifteen minutes on arrival. Stone washed linen needs no pressing after that unless you want it.

With love from Bali,
Myrah
