It finds where the Sun and Moon were at the minute you were born, and which degree of the zodiac was crossing the eastern horizon where you were born, using the same astronomy that planetarium software uses. Everything runs in your browser.

• Birth date gives your sun sign and, on most days, your moon sign.
• Birth time adds your rising sign and settles your moon sign on days the Moon changed sign.
• Birthplace sets the time zone, including historical daylight saving, and the horizon your rising sign is measured from.

Common questions

Can I find my big three without my birth time?

You can find your sun sign and usually your moon sign. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so it needs your birth time. If the Moon changed sign on your birthday, the calculator shows both possible moon signs and the local time it moved.

Which of the big three matters most?

None of them alone. Your sun sign is the one horoscopes use, but many astrologers read the Moon for your inner life and the rising sign for your outer life, and read all three together.

How accurate is this sun, moon and rising calculator?

The positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and in our tests they matched reference charts to within 2 arcminutes. The birth time you enter matters far more than the maths, which is why the calculator tells you when a sign sits within one degree of the next.

Is my birth data saved?

No. The calculation runs on your own device and nothing you enter is stored or sent. If you choose to join the Muse-Letter, we keep your email address and your three sign names, never your birth date, time or place.
