Linen Wedding Dress: What to Look For, and How to Have One Made in Bali
A linen wedding dress is a bridal gown cut from flax linen rather than satin, tulle or structured silk. It suits a bride who wants to breathe, move and sit down through her own ceremony, and it wears well in heat. Expect soft creasing, a quieter shine than silk, and a dress you can wear again.
Most wedding dresses are built to be photographed. Linen is built to be lived in. Below: what to check before you buy, how made to order works when the dress is sewn in Bali, and which pieces in our Linen Wedding Dresses collection suit which kind of day.
Is linen a good fabric for a wedding dress?
Yes, for the right ceremony. Linen is the most breathable of the common bridal fabrics, which is why it works for a beach, garden, courthouse or destination wedding where a lined gown becomes unbearable by the second hour. Flax is highly absorbent and carries heat away from the skin, so it sits cooler than cotton. It drapes with weight rather than float, so a linen gown reads as composed rather than conventionally bridal.
What linen will not do is hold a corseted, architectural shape. If your picture of the day involves a boned bodice and a cathedral train, linen is the wrong fibre. If it involves standing barefoot somewhere warm and still being the most considered woman in the room, it is the right one. The same logic runs through our elopement dress guide and the courthouse wedding dress guide.
What to look for in a linen wedding dress
- Fibre content, as a percentage. "Linen look" and "linen blend" are not linen. Ask for the number. Ours are 100% French linen, or linen paired with another named fibre.
- Whether it is stone washed. Stone washed linen arrives already soft, so it creases into a fold rather than a sharp line. Unwashed linen is crisper for the first few wears.
- The white it actually is. Optical white in linen usually means heavy bleaching. Warmer whites, Moon Milk, Off White, undyed Moonlight, sit softer against skin and photograph without glare.
- Lining. A fully lined linen gown loses the breathability you came for. Look for a slip you can wear underneath instead, so opacity stays your decision.
- Certification. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 means the finished fabric was tested for harmful substances through to the garment. European Flax means the flax was grown in Western Europe with full traceability. Both appear on our linen.
- Who sewed it. If a brand cannot tell you whose hands made the dress or what they were paid, that silence is the answer. The same test applies to dye.
Can you have a wedding dress made in Bali?
Yes, and it is one of the few places where made to order is normal rather than a premium service. Myrah Penaloza is a designer and Kundalini Yoga teacher based in Bali, and every piece is cut and hand stitched by around thirty Balinese artisan families, in their own homes and in workshops they own, never a factory, each paid a real living wage.
You do not need to fly here. A made to order gown is produced from your size selection and shipped to you. Our lead time is 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL. For a wedding, order ten weeks before the date, which gives the making its time, the shipping its time, and you a window to try the dress on. Our linen bridal pieces run from $242 to $498.
Which linen wedding dress suits which ceremony?
Four pieces, four different days, all in the Linen Wedding Dresses collection.
The Oracle Gown, $340. Long, sleeveless, 100% stone washed linen in Moon Milk, the colour of milk left out under a full moon rather than a true white. A high, clean neckline drawn from Japanese tailoring, a bow at the side, deep pockets, and a matching Oracle Jacket in the same linen for a formal ceremony. The one for a wedding that wants presence without a train.
The Linen Brida Gown Short, $248. Knee to midi, wide butterfly sleeves, open front V, 100% French linen, in White. Brida means bride in several languages, and the name came before the bridal orders did. Made to order, for a courthouse morning, a vow renewal, or a second dress for dancing.
The Magdalena Wrap Dress in Moonlight, $242. A deep V wrap in 100% stonewashed French linen, naturally undyed, the most elemental white this fabric offers. It adjusts to the body rather than asking the body to adjust, which matters if you are pregnant, postpartum, or unwilling to be measured four times.
The Devotion Set, $498. A sheer silk top over wide leg French linen trousers. For the bride who was never going to wear a dress, and for the elopement where a hem in the sand makes no sense.
If you want the light of silk rather than the weight of linen, The Gloria Dress at $364 is silk and cotton in Off White Perla, and works whether you are the bride, the witness or the guest.
When should you order, counted backwards?
| Weeks before the wedding | What happens |
|---|---|
| 10 weeks | Order placed, making begins. |
| 4 to 7 weeks | Gown leaves Bali, 3 to 6 weeks after the order. |
| 2 to 5 weeks | Arrives with you, 5 to 15 business days with DHL. |
| 2 weeks | Tried on, hem decided, anything local handled. |
For December 2026, 22 October is the last safe order date for delivery by 24 December.
Common Questions About Linen Wedding Dresses
Is linen appropriate for a wedding dress? Yes, for a warm weather, beach, garden, courthouse or destination ceremony. Linen breathes better than any other common bridal fabric and holds up through a full day of standing and dancing. It is the wrong choice only if you want a boned, structured silhouette.
Does a linen wedding dress wrinkle during the ceremony? It creases, and stone washed linen creases softly rather than sharply. A night on a hanger settles most of it beforehand, and what arrives during the day reads as movement rather than mess. If uncreased lines matter more than breathing, choose silk.
How far in advance should I order a linen wedding dress? Ten weeks before the wedding. Our pieces are 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL, and the rest is your margin for trying it on and any hem.
Can you get a wedding dress made in Bali without travelling there? Yes. A made to order piece is produced from your size selection in Bali and shipped to you, on the same 3 to 6 week timeline. There is no fitting appointment to fly to.
What colour is a linen wedding dress if it is not pure white? Usually a warm white. Moon Milk, Off White and undyed Moonlight are the three we work in. All three photograph without the glare optical white produces, and sit kindly against skin.
The dress you can breathe in is the dress you remember wearing.
With love from Bali,
Myrah.
