Two reasons, both practical. The first is light. Civil ceremony rooms are lit with overhead fluorescents, which push a pure optical white toward blue and flatten the face beside it. A warmer white holds skin tone. The second is afterwards. An off white dress goes to dinners and to other people's weddings. A stark bridal white mostly goes back into the wardrobe. If you want colour, the traditional palette is pale rather than bright: dove, sage, blush, soft clay.

How long should a civil ceremony dress be?

Knee length, midi, or full length. Not a train.

Midi is the most forgiving choice because it clears the floor of a corridor you did not choose and photographs well seated and standing. Full length works beautifully if the hem sits at the ankle rather than pooling. A short train in a municipal building is the one decision people reliably regret: there is nowhere for it to be, and someone will step on it.

Which fabric actually holds up through the day?

Linen, silk and a heavy cotton behave well. Polyester crepe does not: a civil ceremony in summer means a corridor with no air conditioning, and a fabric that does not breathe will show it.

The honest caveat most guides skip: linen creases. That is the fibre, not a flaw, and no finish removes it. What matters is how. The wear it again test, in five questions

This separates a good civil ceremony dress from an expensive one.

• Can you name three occasions in the next two years? If the answer is only the wedding, the cost per wear is the whole price.
• Does it work without the shoes you bought for the day? A dress that only works with one pair of heels is a costume.
• Can you eat lunch in it? Test the waist sitting down, not standing in a mirror.
• Will it look current in five years of photographs? Simple silhouettes date slowly. Trend detailing dates fast.
• Is it washable at home? Dry clean only turns a favourite into an occasion dress within a year.
