Article: What Is Made to Order Clothing? How It Works, How Long It Takes, and Why It Costs More

Nothing here exists until you ask for it
the first question we get is almost never about the fabric. it is some version of: so where is it right now? the honest answer is that it is not anywhere yet.
Made to order clothing means the garment is cut and sewn only after you place your order, rather than taken from existing stock. Nothing is made in advance, so nothing is thrown away unsold. The trade is time: you wait while it is made, instead of waiting for it to be shipped.
What does made to order mean?
Made to order describes when a garment is made, not how it is sized. You order, and then the cutting begins. Most of what you buy online was made months ago in a forecast quantity, warehoused, and discounted or destroyed if the forecast was wrong. Made to order inverts that: demand first, production second.
For us that means every piece in Made to Order Clothing is cut and sewn by the Balinese artisan families we have worked with since the beginning, in their own homes and in workshops they own themselves, never a factory. Each one is paid a real living wage. There is no warehouse of finished dresses behind this site waiting for someone to want them.
How long does made to order clothing take?
Allow 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL. That is the whole answer and it does not change by piece or by season.
Here is what those weeks are actually doing.
- Week one. Your order is read by a person, the fabric is chosen and the piece is cut. If the colourway is botanical, the dye bath starts here and runs for five to seven days on its own.
- Weeks two to five. It is sewn in one of the artisan homes or workshops, by one person rather than along a line, then washed and finished.
- Week three to six. Final checks, pressing and packing, plastic free. We write to you while it is being made.
- After shipment. 5 to 15 business days with DHL, tracked, with the tracking number sent the day it leaves Bali.
Is made to order the same as made to measure?
No, and the difference matters before you buy. Made to measure means the garment is cut to your own measurements. Made to order means it is cut to a standard size, after you order it.
Our pieces are made to order in set sizes, usually S/M, M/L and XL, with some gowns and kaftans in one size. If you are between two sizes, write to support@myrahpenaloza.com with your bust, waist, hip and height before you order.
Why does made to order clothing cost more?
Because nothing in the price is being subsidised by volume. A factory run of two thousand identical dresses spreads its setup across two thousand garments. A run of nine does not. The rest of the arithmetic sits in the fibre itself.
The other costs are visible in the piece. One hundred per cent French linen, certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100, rather than a blend. Botanical dyeing that takes days before a seam is sewn: seven days for the Rainbeau colourway, five to seven for Uluwatu Sunset. A living wage to the family who sewed it. Prices run from $188 to $548, and shipping is free worldwide over $350.
What to order first, and when
If you have never bought this way, start with something you will wear weekly rather than something you are saving for an occasion. The Rainbeau Linen Suka Set is the easiest entry, $218 for the button-down top alone and $244 for the top with the wide-leg shorts, in one hundred per cent French linen with seven days of botanical dye behind the colour. The Eva Top and Orisa Dance Skirt Set is the structured answer to the same question, $188 for the Eva Top and $408 for the full set.
For something you will keep for years, the Dharma Gown Sleeveless at $318 is one size, open front, with side pockets, in stonewashed French linen and the Mahashivrati botanical dye. The Fall Nidra Duster, also $318, is woven closer for cooler weather and works open over almost anything. The rest sits in Made to Order Clothing.
On timing, be honest with yourself about the date. For a wedding or any fixed event, order ten weeks ahead. For December 2026, 22 October was the last safe order date for delivery by 24 December, so a piece ordered now will not arrive in time. If it is a gift, a gift card is the honest answer this side of the holiday.
What you should know before you order
Three things, said plainly.
- Botanical colour varies between runs. Rainbeau, Uluwatu Sunset and Mahashivrati are built by hand in plant dye, so yours will sit in the same family of colour as the photograph and will not match it exactly. That is the process working, not a fault, and it changes how you wash it.
- Exchanges, not refunds. You have 10 days from delivery to send a piece back unworn, unwashed and tagged, and we issue store credit toward the right size. Customised pieces are final sale.
- Order for the date, not the mood. Made to order clothing takes 3 to 6 weeks plus shipping, every time. If you need it for something, count backwards first.
Common questions about made to order clothing

How long does made to order clothing take to arrive?
Allow 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL. For a wedding or any fixed date, order ten weeks ahead so the timeline has room in it.

No. Made to measure is cut to your own measurements. Made to order is cut to a standard size once you order. Ours are made to order in S/M, M/L and XL, with some gowns and kaftans in one size.
Can you exchange made to order clothing?
Yes, as an exchange. You have 10 days from delivery to return a piece unworn, unwashed and with its tags, and we issue store credit toward the size or piece that is right. We do not give cash refunds, and customised pieces are final sale.
What should I look for in handmade slow fashion pieces?
Four things you can check before you buy: the fibre named as a percentage rather than as a mood, a certification you can look up such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100, a stated lead time, and a clear answer on who sewed it and what they were paid. We set out the three questions to ask any brand here.
With love from Bali,
Myrah
