Rising Sign Calculator

A rising sign calculator finds your ascendant: the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact minute and place you were born. Enter your birth date, time and birthplace below. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so it needs your birth time.

How does the rising sign calculator work?

It works out which degree of the zodiac was crossing the eastern horizon where you were born, at the minute you were born, using the same astronomy that planetarium software uses. Everything runs in your browser.

  • Birth time is essential. The rising sign moves about one degree every four minutes.
  • Birthplace sets the time zone, including historical daylight saving, and the latitude of your horizon.
  • Birth date adds your sun and moon signs, and the calculator names your chart ruler.

What does your rising sign tell you?

Your rising sign is how you meet the world and how the world first meets you, which is why people so often mistake it for your sun sign. I wrote about what it shapes in business, family and daily life in rising sign vs sun sign. For the moon sign on its own, use the moon sign calculator.

Common questions

Can I find my rising sign without my birth time?

Not reliably. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so without a time it could be almost any sign. Your birth certificate, hospital records or a parent's memory are the usual places to find it. The calculator still shows your sun and moon signs without it.

How accurate is this rising sign calculator?

In our tests the maths matched reference charts to within 2 arcminutes. The birth time you enter matters far more: the rising sign moves about one degree every four minutes, so a time rounded to the hour can change it near a sign boundary. The calculator tells you when you are within one degree of the next sign.

What is a chart ruler?

Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your rising sign, for example Mercury for Virgo rising or the Moon for Cancer rising. The calculator names yours. Where it sits in your chart shows where your energy most wants to go.

Is my birth data saved?

No. The calculation runs on your own device and nothing you enter is stored or sent. If you choose to join the Muse-Letter, we keep your email address and your three sign names, never your birth date, time or place.
