Dressed for a Bali Wedding

the invitation says Bali, and it does not say what that means for what you wear.

For a Bali wedding, wear a long, loose dress in a natural fibre, in colour rather than white, with your shoulders coverable and your feet in a block heel or a flat. A villa, beach or clifftop wedding is resort formal. A ceremony at a temple or a family compound asks for a sarong and sash, and for shoulders and knees covered.

The longer answer matters, because Bali wedding covers at least four events with four dress codes, and the climate quietly decides how well any of them go. We make clothing in Pererenan, on the island, and the mistake we watch guests make is never about taste. It is about fabric, length and shoes.

What do you wear to a Bali wedding as a guest?

One long piece that moves, in linen, cotton or silk, and in a colour. That is the whole brief, and it works at nearly every venue on the island.

Climate before fashion. Bali sits about eight degrees south of the equator, daytime temperatures hold in the low thirties Celsius, high eighties Fahrenheit, and humidity rarely drops below seventy per cent, so your body cannot cool itself by evaporation the way it does at home. A loose cut and a fibre that breathes do the work your sweat cannot.

So the fibre is the decision. Linen, cotton, ramie and silk move moisture off the skin and release it into the air. Polyester does the opposite. Our linen is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which tests the finished fabric for harmful substances. For an evening ceremony, silk and cotton creases less and holds light better.

Length is the counter-intuitive part. A long dress is cooler than a short one here. It keeps sun off your legs, lets air move underneath, and covers your ankles when the mosquitoes arrive. It also means you are already dressed for a temple.

Which Bali wedding are you actually going to?

Ask the couple. It changes your shoes.

Venue Dress code What to wear Shoes
Villa or garden, Canggu Resort formal Long or midi dress, colour or print, light layer for indoors Block heel or flat sandal
Beach, west coast Relaxed resort Long loose dress, nothing that drags in wet sand Barefoot or flat, carried
Clifftop, Uluwatu Resort formal, windy Weighted hem, hair you can secure Block heel, never a stiletto on stone steps
Temple or family compound Traditional, modest Shoulders and knees covered, sarong and sash Easy to remove

Do you need a sarong and a sash?

At a temple or family compound, yes, both. A sarong wrapped below the knee and a sash tied at the waist are the minimum for entering a Balinese temple, and the sash is not decorative.

Almost every temple lends or rents them at the entrance, and a Balinese host will have them ready. Shoulders should be covered too, so bring a layer even if the invitation sounds casual. And temples traditionally ask women who are menstruating not to enter the inner grounds, which is posted on the signage.

the sash is not decoration. it is the line between the upper body and the lower one, and the Balinese read it.

What should you not wear to a Bali wedding?

White or ivory, as at any wedding, and then three things specific to the island.

  • Anything lined or synthetic. A polyester lining in seventy per cent humidity is why a guest spends the reception looking for a fan.
  • A stiletto. Grass, sand, uneven stone, and in Uluwatu steps cut into a cliff. A block heel gives the same height and none of the ankle.
  • A long trailing hem on sand. Wet sand is heavy, it stains, and it does not let go.

Then the rain. Bali's wet season runs November to March, heaviest December to February, and it rarely rains all day. It arrives as a heavy afternoon downpour of an hour or two, survivable if your dress is not silk chiffon and your shoes are not suede. Pack a light layer that doubles as your temple cover.

If the wedding is on sand, the beach wedding guest guide goes deeper, linen wedding guest dresses covers styling one piece across a trip, and what to pack for Bali handles the suitcase.

The piece we would send

The Gloria Dress in Dark Moon Black. Silk and cotton, no synthetics, a round open neck that leaves room for whatever you wear at your throat, and deep side pockets that actually work. The silk returns the light already in the room, and the cotton keeps it cool against the skin. Hand stitched in Bali by the artisan families who have made for this house since the beginning, each paid a real living wage. S/M and M/L, $364 for the dress alone, and the rest of our ceremony pieces sit in bridal and special occasion.

Myrah, who designs every piece and teaches Kundalini Yoga here, cut it so you can sit cross-legged in it. Allow 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL. For a wedding, order ten weeks ahead.

Common questions about Bali wedding guest dresses

What is the dress code for a Bali wedding?

Most Bali weddings are resort formal: a long or midi dress in a light natural fibre, in colour rather than white, with flat or block-heeled shoes. A ceremony at a temple or family compound is stricter: shoulders and knees covered, plus a sarong and sash, usually provided.

Can you wear black to a wedding in Bali?

Yes, black is fine at a villa, beach club or clifftop wedding in Bali, and reads as considered rather than sombre. Avoid heavy black fabric that holds heat, and avoid black at a traditional Balinese Hindu ceremony, where lighter colours with a sarong and sash are expected.

What do female guests wear to a Balinese wedding?

At a traditional Balinese Hindu wedding, women wear a kebaya, a fitted lace or embroidered blouse, over a sarong, with a sash at the waist. Foreign guests are not expected to own one and hosts are glad to arrange it. Without kebaya, what matters is covered shoulders, covered knees and a sash.

Is a long dress too hot for a Bali wedding?

No, a long dress is usually cooler than a short one in Bali, provided it is loose and made of a breathable natural fibre. What makes a guest overheat is a tight cut, a lining, or a synthetic that traps humidity against the skin.

Can I wear a linen dress to a wedding?

Yes, and in a hot climate linen is the better choice. It reads as considered at a garden, beach or villa wedding, particularly in a deeper colour. For a formal evening wedding, a silk and cotton blend creases less and photographs smoother.

You will remember almost nothing about what you wore. You will remember whether you stayed until the end.

With love from Bali,
Myrah
