What to Wear for a Milestone Birthday Abroad

For a milestone birthday abroad, bring one piece for the night itself, two that carry the rest of the trip, and nothing that needs an iron. Natural fibres, because you will be warm, you will be photographed, and you will be wearing the same thing for fourteen hours. Linen for the days. Silk for the dinner. Start with the night, then work backwards

There is one evening. You know which one. The table outside, the people who flew to be there, the moment somebody stands up with a glass and says the thing you did not know they had been carrying.

Choose that piece first. Everything else in the case is decided by what it needs to sit beside.

The piece for that night should do three things. It should let you eat. It should photograph in low light without disappearing. And it should still look like you in ten years, when the photograph has outlived the restaurant.

Why linen and silk travel better than anything else

This is physics, not preference.

Linen is the most breathable fibre in common use. Its structure moves moisture away from skin and lets air pass through the weave rather than trapping it against you, which is the whole difference between a hot day you enjoy and one you endure. It also softens with every wash, so the piece you wear on the last morning feels better than the one you packed.

Silk regulates rather than insulates. It stays cool in heat and warm in a cold cabin, and it weighs almost nothing in a case.

What about creasing

Hang the piece in the bathroom while you shower on the first morning and most of it drops out. What remains is the texture linen is loved for. Most of what we make is one size, cut generously and designed to fall rather than fit. On a trip this matters more than it does at home, because your body on day six is not your body on day one. How far ahead to order

This is the part that catches people, so we will be plain about it.

Almost everything we make is cut and sewn after you order it, by a named person, in her own home or in a small workshop she owns. Standard production and delivery runs three to six weeks. Custom sizing or a colour made for you takes longer.

If your date is closer than that, write to us before you order rather than after. We can often tell you within a day whether it is possible, and we would far rather say no in August than disappoint you in October. What colour to wear

There is no rule. There is one useful question.

Look at where you are going and what will be behind you in every photograph. White walls and dark water take colour beautifully. A garden takes cream and gold. A city at night takes indigo and black and almost nothing else.
