Does One Size Fit Me? An Honest Answer Before You Order

Why one size at all

It is a fair question, and the honest answer is not that it is easier for us.

Graded sizing means committing fabric to guesses. You cut a run across six sizes, and the sizes that do not sell become dead stock, which then gets discounted, and eventually destroyed. For a brand making garments in runs of tens rather than thousands, in homes and small workshops rather than a factory, that waste is not something we can absorb or justify.

The design answer is to cut generously and let the garment adapt: wrap closures, adjustable front cinches, drawstrings, drape that falls rather than clings. A well-made one-size piece is not a compromise. It is a garment designed to still fit you through a body that changes, which most wardrobes are not.

The three measurements that actually decide it

Dress size is a poor predictor here. These three are not.

1. Full bust. The widest point, measured over a bra you would actually wear with the piece. This is the number that decides most gowns, kaftans and button-downs.
2. Fullest hip. Usually seven to nine inches below the natural waist. This decides trousers, playsuits and anything with a defined waist.
3. Torso length, shoulder to crotch. The one almost nobody measures and the one that decides whether a playsuit works on you. Run the tape from the top of your shoulder, down the front, through, and back up to the same shoulder.

Two minutes with a soft tape measure, standing relaxed rather than holding your breath. Write them down. They are the same three numbers every brand should be asking you for and most do not.

Which silhouette suits which body

If you are petite, tall, or curvy

All three come up constantly in our reviews, and all three have a straight answer.

Petite, under 5 foot 3. Width is rarely the problem. Length is. Most of our customers who are petite treat a small hem alteration as a normal part of owning the piece, and a good tailor will do it for very little. Kaftans and gowns take a hem beautifully because the drape does the work.

Tall, 5 foot 9 and over. Gowns and kaftans usually work and read as a slightly shorter length on you, which often looks better. Playsuits are the piece to check first, because torso length is the constraint. Measure shoulder to crotch and email it to us before ordering.

Curvy and plus. Some of our most enthusiastic customers are size 16 and above, and the honest picture is mixed by silhouette. Wrap and cinch pieces and sets tend to work well past the stated range because the closure adapts. Fitted-waist playsuits are the ones to ask about. Do not guess on this. Send us your bust and hip and we will tell you plainly whether a piece works, including when the answer is no.

The part we would rather say plainly

We do not offer refunds for change of mind. Every piece is cut and sewn by a specific person after your order is placed, and standard production and delivery runs three to six weeks. There is no warehouse to send it back to.

That is a real commitment to ask of you, especially the first time. It is also exactly why we answer sizing emails properly rather than pointing you at a chart. A five-minute exchange before you order is better for both of us than a garment that does not fit and cannot go back.

If a piece arrives damaged or defective, that is different, and we handle it. Contact us within seven days.

Frequently asked questions

What does one size fits most actually mean?

On our garments it means built to fit US 2 to 16 comfortably, with many pieces extending well beyond that. It is achieved through generous cuts, wrap closures, adjustable front cinches and drape rather than by stretching one fixed shape. Whether a specific piece fits you depends more on your full bust, fullest hip and torso length than on your usual dress size.

Does one size fit plus size bodies?

Often yes, and it depends on the silhouette rather than the number. Wrap pieces, cinch-front gowns and two-piece sets adapt well past US 16 because the closure does the adjusting. Fitted-waist playsuits are the least accommodating. How do I measure myself for one-size clothing?

Three measurements, taken with a soft tape while standing relaxed. Full bust at the widest point over a bra you would wear with the piece. Fullest hip, roughly seven to nine inches below the natural waist. And torso length, from the top of the shoulder down the front, through, and back up to the same shoulder. That third one is the one most people skip and the one that decides whether a playsuit fits.

I am tall. Will a one-size playsuit fit me?

Torso length is the constraint rather than width, so measure shoulder to crotch before ordering if you are 5 foot 9 or taller. Gowns and kaftans generally work well on taller frames and simply read as a slightly shorter length. If you are unsure, send us the measurement and we will check it against the specific piece.

Can I get a garment made to my measurements?

Yes, on selected styles. Email support@myrahpenaloza.com with your measurements and the piece you are interested in before placing the order. Since every garment is made by hand after you order, making it to your measurements is often a smaller adjustment than people expect. Custom pieces may take a little longer than the standard three to six weeks.

Can I return a piece if it does not fit?

We are not able to offer refunds for change of mind, because each piece is made by hand to order by a specific person in Bali rather than pulled from warehouse stock. Damaged or defective items are a different matter and we handle those, within seven days of delivery. This is exactly why we would rather answer your sizing questions properly before you order.
