four gates and a very long sentence

there is one part of a Human Design chart that almost nobody reads first, and almost everybody wants to.

Your incarnation cross in Human Design is the theme the system assigns to your whole life, built from four gates: where the Sun and the Earth sat at the moment you were born, and where they sat about 88 days before that. The system counts 192 of them. It is real information, and it is the last layer to read, not the first.

What is an incarnation cross in Human Design?

It is a set of four gate numbers, plus the name the system gives that combination. Two come from your birth moment, which Human Design calls your Personality, the conscious part you recognise in yourself. Two come from roughly 88 days earlier, your Design, the unconscious part other people see in you before you do.

The Sun and the Earth always sit opposite each other on the wheel, so each side gives a pair rather than one gate, which is why a cross is written as four numbers with a line through the middle, in the shape 43/23 | 49/4. The 88 days are not quite days either. The system measures 88 degrees of the Sun's arc before birth, which lands close to three calendar months.

the cross is not an instruction. it is a description of the weather you were born into.

How do you find your incarnation cross?

Four steps, and you need your birth time for all of them.

  • Generate your chart with your birth date, your exact birth time and your birth city. Ours is free and asks for nothing: the Human Design chart calculator.
  • Find the two columns of gate numbers beside the body graph. One is Personality, usually black or on the left. The other is Design, usually red.
  • In each column, find the row marked with the Sun symbol and the row marked with the Earth symbol. Those four rows are all you need.
  • Read them in this order: Personality Sun, Personality Earth, Design Sun, Design Earth. Those four numbers are your cross.

One caution, worth more than the reading. Gates shift within minutes of birth time, so if yours is a family guess, the cross is a layer you cannot read honestly, and saying so beats building a story on it. The panel by panel walkthrough covers what you can read without it.

What do right angle, left angle and juxtaposition mean?

Three groups, describing whose life the theme is said to be about.

Angle The system's name What it is said to mean
Right Angle Personal destiny The largest group. A life worked out through your own experience.
Left Angle Transpersonal destiny A life bound up with other people, arriving through them rather than through planning.
Juxtaposition Fixed fate The smallest group. One fixed theme rather than a movement between two.

That is how the system describes itself, and I pass it on in those terms rather than asserting it. Human Design has no peer reviewed evidence base, and I have said so plainly in is Human Design real.

Why is the incarnation cross the last thing to read?

Because it gives you the theme and nothing about the mechanics. Your type tells you how you are built to engage, your authority how to make a decision you can live with, your profile lines how you learn. All three are usable tomorrow morning. The cross is usually only usable backwards, years later, when you can see the shape of what you already did.

I can be exact about this, because of what my own papers contain. The blueprint I keep and return to was made for me by Erin Claire Jones, and it runs nine sections: leadership type, communication strategy, decision-making authority, process, distractions, signposts, strengths, environmental style and profile. It does not print my incarnation cross at all. Neither does Robindra's. Two founders, two charts, and the layer everyone asks about first is the one our own working documents leave out.

What they do print has decided far more. Mine says Manifesting Generator, and that clarity comes to me with time rather than in the moment, which is emotional authority. His says Generator, and that his arrives as a gut response in the moment. That single difference has shaped how we run this company more than any life theme could. He can answer in the room. I cannot, and I have stopped apologising for it.

Both blueprints print the same signpost, in the same words: satisfaction when we are on track, frustration when we are not. You can check that on a Tuesday afternoon. A cross you cannot check at all.

So what is the cross actually good for?

Good as a long description read in reverse, poor as a plan. Three uses I trust.

  • Naming a pattern you have already lived, never predicting one. If the theme does not describe something in your own history, leave it alone.
  • Making peace with a life that did not take the shape you expected. The woman who built something slow while everyone she trained with scaled, and spent years assuming she had got it wrong.
  • Deciding what to put down. A theme is also a boundary, and most of us need permission to stop more than another direction.

If you take one thing from this page, take the order: type, then authority, then profile, then the cross. Nothing in a chart expires.

Frequently asked questions

Can you have more than one incarnation cross?

No. One birth chart gives one incarnation cross and it does not change. What changes is how much of it you recognise.

Do I need my exact birth time to find my incarnation cross?

Yes. The gates shift within minutes, so a guessed birth time gives you a cross that may not be yours. Without a reliable time, read your type and your centres instead.

How many incarnation crosses are there in Human Design?

The system counts 192, divided into right angle, left angle and juxtaposition crosses. The right angle group is the largest.

Is the incarnation cross the same thing as your life purpose?

Not quite. The system presents it as the theme of a life rather than a job or a calling. Many people with the same cross live it out in completely unrelated work.

Should I read my type or my incarnation cross first?

Your type, every time. Type and authority change how you make a decision this week. The cross tends to make sense only once you look back over several years.

the chart does not tell you who to become. at its best it tells you to stop auditioning for a life that was never on your page.
