Nothing On It Is Printed
A letter from the making, on what it costs in hours to put a moon on a sleeve.
There is a set on the table this week that has taken longer to make than almost anything else we have put out this year, and there are only five of them.
The Two Moons Anusara. Harvest Moon red curving into Moon Milk off white, two moons turning around each other down the length of the body. The thing people assume when they see the photographs is that it is a print.
"nothing on it is printed. every curve is a piece of linen, cut and placed by a hand that decided where it went."
Why a curve is the hardest thing to ask of linen
A straight seam in linen is honest work and it goes quickly. Two edges meet, and the cloth agrees with you. A curve does not agree with you. Linen has very little give, so when you set one curved edge inside another, the fabric wants to gather along the inside of the arc and pull along the outside. There is no clever way around it. You ease it in by small degrees, and you check it against the body rather than against the flat pattern, because a curve that looks right on a table can sit wrong on a hip.
Multiply that by every moon on the set, then by five sets, and you have the reason this one took the time it took.
Where the work actually happens
Around thirty Balinese artisan families make everything this house makes. About half work from their own homes. About half work from small workshops the tailors own and run themselves. Neither is a factory, and neither is owned by us. Everyone is paid a real living wage.
In the half that work from home, the sound of a sewing machine sits alongside children finishing homework and rice cooking for dinner. That is where the two moons on this set were pieced.
The reason we do not use factories, which is not romance
I want to be plain about this, because the sentimental version gets repeated and it is the weaker argument. We do not avoid factories because home sewing is picturesque. We avoid them because of influence. Inside a factory you are one buyer among many and you have very little say over the conditions on the floor. With a family, and with a small workshop the tailor owns, we are in the room. We know what the space is like, what the hours are, what is missing, and when something needs to change we can have that conversation directly with the person who can change it.
A set like this is where that shows. Nobody can be hurried through a hand-pieced curve. If the person doing it is not free to go slowly, the curve tells on you.
Five, and why that is the number
Five is not a scarcity decision. Five is how many of these can be pieced by hand at the pace the work actually requires. When these five are gone, they are gone.
And because every curve is cut and placed by a hand rather than stamped out, the two moons fall a little differently on each of the five. The red sits slightly higher on one. On another the pale moon opens wider. There is no version of hand-piecing that produces five identical sets, and I have stopped thinking of that as the flaw in the method. It is the proof of it.
What I would want you to know before you choose it
It is one size, and both the sleeve and the wide Mona pant gather on a tie you pull yourself. That is a decision we make again and again: give you the last word on the fit rather than cut a waist and hope. It moves with your body instead of asking your body to arrive a certain shape.
The Anusara top and the Mona pant can each be worn on their own, which is the quiet argument for a set like this. You are not buying one outfit. You are buying two pieces that will separate and go on living.
It is made in Bali after you order: 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL. That is the time the making takes, not a delay. Wash it cold and on its own for the first few washes, gently, and hang it to dry out of direct sun.
And when it arrives, look at where the curve sits on your set rather than on the one in the photograph. They are not the same set. That is the whole point of it.
With love from Bali,
Myrah.
