The Part of the Chart That Changes a Tuesday

In Human Design, your Authority is the part of the chart that describes how your body is said to reach a decision. There are seven. They run in a fixed order of precedence, and whichever sits highest in your chart is the one the system tells you to use. Type is what everyone learns first. Authority is what changes how a day runs.

Why Authority matters more than type

Type fits on a graphic, so type is the part that travels. But it only describes a general posture toward the world. Authority tells you what to do at four in the afternoon when someone asks a question and you have to answer it. If you have read nothing about the system yet, start with what Human Design actually is, including the part where I am honest about what it can and cannot claim.

The hierarchy, which is the part nobody explains

The seven Authorities are not a menu. They are a ranked list, read from the top down. The first one present in your chart is yours and everything below it is silent. The order is Solar Plexus, then Sacral, then Spleen, then Heart, then G Centre, then Mental, then Lunar.

Which produces the most common error in the whole system. A Generator with a defined Solar Plexus does not have Sacral Authority. Emotional sits above Sacral, so Emotional wins. Since roughly half of all charts carry a defined Solar Plexus, a great many people describing themselves as gut deciders are, by the system's own rules, not. I know this because I am one of them.

All seven, in plain language

Attributing rather than asserting, because none of it is measured. This is what the system says.

Emotional Authority, the Solar Plexus. Roughly half of all charts. Feeling moves in a wave, so a decision made at the crest or the trough will not survive the middle. The instruction is to wait. I have written about what that waiting feels like, since nobody describes it well.

Sacral Authority. Generators and Manifesting Generators without a defined Solar Plexus. A gut response in the present tense, arriving before the reasoning does, often as a sound rather than a sentence. Trust the immediate answer.

Splenic Authority. The oldest and quietest of the seven. Said to speak once, instantly, and never repeat itself, which is why it is so easily talked over. If you have ever known not to get into a car, that is the register.

Ego or Heart Authority. Rare, framed around willpower rather than feeling. The question is not is this good. It is do I want this, and will I still want it when it costs me something.

Self Projected Authority. Found in some Projectors. Hear yourself talk, out loud, to someone who will not interrupt. What is listened for is direction rather than desire.

Mental or Environmental Authority. Found in Mental Projectors, described as having no inner authority at all. Talk the decision through with several people, not for their advice but to hear your own thinking.

Lunar Authority. Reflectors only, around one per cent of charts. Wait a full lunar cycle, twenty eight days, before anything major, so the decision is seen under every phase of the moon first.

What it looks like with two of them under one roof

I am a Manifesting Generator with Emotional Authority. Robindra is a Generator with Sacral Authority. He can know a thing in the moment. I cannot. We spent years reading that as a fault in one of us, and what fixed it was having language for the difference.

The rule we made is one line long. Nothing structural gets decided the day it arrives. He gets his instant answer and I want to hear it. The caveat, which belongs in every one of these

There is no peer reviewed evidence that Human Design describes anything real about human personality. One formal study exists, funded by the founder, never peer reviewed, and the researcher who ran it concluded the system as taught had problems.

You will also see it claimed that a 2015 Nobel Prize validated the system. It did not. That prize confirmed neutrinos have mass. The claim that neutrino streams carry planet specific information which imprints a personality at birth is untested and not part of physics. And any framework built from evocative, flattering descriptions produces a strong feeling of recognition whether or not it is accurate, which is the Forer effect, documented in 1949.

So I am not telling you the chart is true. I am telling you that noticing whether you decide fast or slow, and arranging your life to respect it, is worth doing with or without one.

Is Human Design Authority the same as intuition?

Not quite. Intuition is a general term for knowing without reasoning. Authority is a specific claim about which part of the body that knowing comes from and how long it takes to be trustworthy. Splenic is closest to what most people mean by intuition. Emotional is nearly the opposite, since it argues the instant signal is the one not to trust.

The system did not tell me anything I did not already half know. It told me the half knowing was allowed to be a method, and that was the useful part.
