What is a rising sign?

As the Earth turns, a new zodiac sign crosses the eastern horizon roughly every two hours. The one on the horizon at your birth is your rising sign, also called your ascendant. How do I find my rising sign?

You need your exact birth time and the town you were born in. Then:

• Find your birth time. It may be on your birth certificate or in hospital records, or a parent may remember it. The closer to the minute the better, since the rising sign moves about one degree every four minutes.

• If your time is uncertain, run the calculation at both ends of your possible window. If the sign changes, read both descriptions, or ask an astrologer about rectification, estimating a birth time from life events.
