What is a moon sign, and how is it different from your sun sign?

The Sun spends about a month in each sign, so your birth date alone gives you your sun sign. The Moon moves far faster, through a whole sign in roughly two and a half days. Two women born in the same week can share a sun sign and have entirely different moons, which is why a horoscope written to your sun can feel almost right and never quite land.

In the tradition, the Sun is the light you are growing toward: purpose, will, the self you choose. The Moon is the reflex underneath it: the body's memory, your first reaction, the thing you reach for at eleven at night when the day has gone sideways. How do I find my moon sign?

You need your birth date, and ideally your birth time and place. Then:

• Gather your birth details. Date, time and town. A birth certificate or a parent's memory is usually enough.

• If you do not know your time, check whether the Moon changed signs on your birth day. If it did not, the date alone gives your answer. If it did, you have two possible moons, and reading both usually makes yours obvious.

What does your moon sign mean in relationships?

Your moon sign shows what you need in order to feel loved, which is often different from what you say you want. This is the heart of moon sign compatibility. Two people whose moons share an element, fire, earth, air or water, tend to comfort each other without translation.

In our own charts, the thing that explains us is not our suns. Robindra is a Capricorn sun with a Virgo moon, and my sun, my Mercury and my rising sign are all in Virgo. His Moon sits on my Virgo placements, which astrologers read as deep emotional attunement. My own Moon is in Libra, a moon that, in the tradition, needs harmony and fairness to feel settled. How does your moon sign affect your business?

Your sun sign starts things. Your moon sign decides whether you can keep going. Many founders build a business that feeds the Sun, ambition and vision and being seen, and starves the Moon, which quietly asks for rest, rhythm, beauty or belonging. What gets called burnout can sometimes be read, in astrological terms, as an unfed Moon.

What does your child's moon sign tell you?

Your child's moon sign can hint at how they most need to be comforted, and your own moon sign shows how you instinctively comfort, which is not always the same thing. A mother with an earth moon may reach for a snack and a blanket when a water-moon child needs, first, to be held and heard. Neither is wrong. They are two languages.

Hold it lightly. A chart can help you ask a better question about your child. It should never decide who your child is allowed to be.

How do you work with your moon sign every day?

Your moon sign describes your emotional nature: what makes you feel safe, how you react before you think, what comforts you and how you care for others. Many people recognise themselves more quickly in their moon sign than in their sun sign.
