The night before

A rehearsal dinner dress is what the bride wears the evening before the wedding, and the convention is something white, cream or pale, lighter than the wedding dress and more considered than ordinary evening clothes. The useful question is not which dress photographs best for one night. It is which dress you will still want in your wardrobe a year from now.

the rehearsal dinner is the evening almost nobody plans for, and often the one women remember more warmly than the wedding itself.

What should the bride wear to the rehearsal dinner?

Something that marks the evening without rehearsing the wedding dress. The point is recognition: you walk in and everyone knows, without an announcement, which woman is getting married tomorrow. White, cream or a pale neutral does that quietly, which is why the convention exists.

Beyond that, the brief is practical in ways bridal sites rarely admit. You will be seated for two or three hours, hugged by people you have not seen in years, photographed more than you expect, and nervous. That rules out anything needing holding up, smoothing down or thinking about. A wrap silhouette, a long dress with real ease, or a wide-leg set in a fibre that breathes will serve you better than something structured.

Does the bride wear white the night before?

Usually, and it is a convention rather than a rule. White on the eve reads unmistakably as bridal. The reason to break it is that some women do not want to wear white twice in two days, and a deep green, ink or clay dress you love will photograph better than a white one you merely accepted.

If you do want white, the fibre matters more than the shade. Undyed linen, which arrives the colour the flax actually is, sits softer against most skin tones than an optically brightened white, and avoids the bluish cast bright whites take on in evening photography.

Rehearsal dinner dresses by setting

Four settings cover most rehearsal dinners. This is the table I would send a friend.

Setting What works What to avoid Fibre
Restaurant, private room Midi or long dress, or a tailored set Anything strapless you will keep adjusting while seated Silk, or linen with a smooth finish
Garden or vineyard Long dress with movement, flat or block heel Stiletto heels on grass, and trains that collect it Linen, cotton
Beach or poolside Wrap dress, kaftan, wide-leg set Full skirts in wind, and fabrics that cling in humidity Linen, ramie
At home, family dinner Slip dress, easy long dress, set Anything that makes you a guest in your own kitchen Linen, bamboo rayon

How far in advance should you order?

Two to three months, if the dress is made rather than pulled off a rail. That sounds cautious until you remember it has to arrive, be tried on, and still leave time if the length is wrong.

Ours are made to order in Bali by around thirty artisan families, in their own homes and in artisan-owned workshops, so the timeline is 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL. I would rather say that plainly than let a date catch you out. If the wedding is closer, buy something that exists today and spend the attention on fit.

The dress you keep

This is worth more than any styling advice. A rehearsal dinner dress is one of the few bridal purchases with a genuine second life, and almost nobody shops for it that way. The wedding dress goes into storage. The rehearsal dress can go to an anniversary dinner, to another wedding as a guest, to nothing in particular on a Thursday.

So the test is simple: take the wedding out of the picture and ask whether you would buy this dress. If no, it is a costume for one evening. If yes, you have bought a dress that happens to have been introduced at a rehearsal dinner. The same logic runs through what to wear to elope, the courthouse and civil ceremony guide, and dressing for a vow renewal, which is the second time you say it.

take the wedding out of the picture and ask whether you would still buy the dress. that is the whole test.

I am a designer and a Kundalini Yoga teacher, and I live in Bali, where we make everything by hand. The piece I would put forward for this evening is the Magdalena Wrap Dress in Moonlight: 100 percent stonewashed French linen, naturally undyed, certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, with European Flax certification confirming the flax was grown in Western Europe without irrigation. It wraps, so it adjusts to you rather than the reverse, and at $242 it is a dress rather than an occasion. If the wedding is in the tropics, the Bali wedding guest guide covers heat, rain season and temple etiquette in more detail.

Common questions about rehearsal dinner dresses

What should the bride wear to the rehearsal dinner?

Something lighter than the wedding dress and more considered than ordinary evening clothes. Most brides choose white, cream or a pale neutral, in a silhouette that reads as deliberate without competing with tomorrow. A long linen or silk dress, a wide-leg set or a slip in a natural fibre all work and stay comfortable through a long dinner.

Does the bride have to wear white to the rehearsal dinner?

No. White is a convention rather than a rule, and it exists so the bride is visibly the bride on an evening when nobody has announced it. Cream, oyster, pale clay and soft gold do the same job. If you would rather not wear white twice, a deep colour you already love beats a white dress you tolerate.

How far in advance should you order a rehearsal dinner dress?

Allow at least two months if the piece is made to order, longer if alterations are likely. Our own pieces take 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL, so ordering two to three months ahead leaves room to receive it and try it on calmly.

Can you wear the same dress to the rehearsal dinner and the wedding?

You can, and some brides do when the wedding is small. The more useful question is whether the rehearsal dress can be worn again afterwards, to an anniversary dinner or another wedding. A dress chosen that way earns its cost rather than sitting in a bag.

What should guests wear to a rehearsal dinner?

Follow the venue, and avoid white. A garden or beach rehearsal asks for a long dress in a breathable natural fibre, a restaurant for something closer to cocktail dress. With no dress code given, assume one step smarter than dinner with friends, and leave white, ivory and cream to the bride.

The wedding dress is for the day everyone is watching. The rehearsal dress is for the evening you can still hear the conversation, which is often the one that stays with you.

With love from Bali,
Myrah
