The dress for the shower, not the wedding

The bride wears white or off white to her own bridal shower, in a dress lighter and shorter than her wedding dress, and she is the only person in the room expected to. A tea length or full length dress in linen, silk or cotton with a clean neckline reads correctly in photographs and survives three hours of being hugged. Everyone else wears colour.

That is the whole answer. Below: how to choose, when to order, and the four pieces from our own bridal shower dresses that brides actually buy for this, each named with its fabric and its price.

What should the bride wear to her own bridal shower?

A bridal shower is not a wedding and not a party. It is two to four hours of daylight, chairs, gifts on a lap, and a camera in front of you more often than you expect. The dress has three jobs: photograph as white without reading as bridal, let you sit down and lean forward, and survive being embraced by everyone who walks in.

So that rules out strapless anything you will spend the afternoon adjusting, a train, a bodice that only works standing up, and heavy satin in a warm room. It rules in natural fibre, a neckline that stays where you put it, and a cut that moves with the body rather than holding it.

the test is not how it looks in the mirror. it is how it looks in the ninth photograph, after you have sat down twice.

Should the bride wear white to her bridal shower?

Yes, and it is the one event where the convention works in your favour. White, off white, cream and naturally undyed all read as the bride, and guests are expected to avoid them, which makes a shower the easiest white you will ever wear. If you would rather not, the next most common choice is a soft neutral: bone, oyster, pale clay.

The one thing worth avoiding is your actual wedding colour story. Save it. Nothing deflates a wedding dress faster than a photograph of something similar from six weeks earlier. The same logic runs through the rehearsal dinner dress, which is the other white you will wear before the day.

Four bridal shower dresses, and who each one is for

These are ours, every detail checked against what is in stock as this is published. I am Myrah, a designer and a Kundalini Yoga teacher in Bali, and these are made by around thirty artisan families here, in their own homes and in artisan owned workshops, each paid a real living wage.

  • The Gloria Dress, $364, silk and cotton, Off White Perla. For the bride who wants to be photographed and not think about it again. Round neck left deliberately open, so whatever you wear at your throat has room, and deep side pockets that are actually functional. The silk and cotton blend returns the light in the room and stays cool against the skin, which pure silk never manages. S/M and M/L. The one I would choose for a garden shower.
  • The Oracle Gown, $340, 100% stone washed linen, Moon Milk. For a formal shower, or a bride who wants length. A high, clean Japanese inspired neckline, sleeveless, a bow that ties at the side so you decide the waist each morning, and deep pockets. Moon Milk is warmer than white, lit faintly from inside, and the linen is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and European Flax certified. A matching Oracle Jacket exists if the room is cool.
  • Magdalena Wrap Dress in Moonlight, $242, 100% stonewashed French linen, naturally undyed. For the bride who does not want a new silhouette, just a very good one. A wrap that adjusts to the body rather than the reverse, deep V, one size. Moonlight is undyed, so it is the most honest white in the collection. The easiest of the four to sit down in.
  • The Devotion Set, $498, sheer silk top with wide leg French linen pants. For the bride who does not want a dress. Two fabrics, two weights, one silhouette, and it answers the shower, the rehearsal dinner and the welcome drinks with one purchase. Brides marrying in something other than a gown tend to arrive here from the courthouse and civil ceremony guide.

All four live in the bridal shower edit with the rest of the white and off white pieces. If you are also choosing for the ceremony itself, the bridal and wedding collection is the one to open.

When to order a made-to-order bridal shower dress

Ten weeks before the shower. Not because it takes ten weeks, but because that leaves room for the dress to arrive, for you to try it on in your own light, and to exchange it if it is not the one.

The honest timing: every piece leaves Bali 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL. That window is the making, not a delay. It is the time it takes for the cloth to be cut, sewn, checked and wrapped by hand. Exchanges are within 10 days of delivery for store credit, which is the other reason to order early rather than at six weeks.

One note on linen. It creases, and that is the fibre being honest about itself. A night on a hanger settles most of it, and no one has ever looked at a linen dress in a photograph and thought it looked unprepared.

Frequently asked questions about bridal shower dresses

What should the bride wear to her bridal shower?

White or off white, lighter and usually shorter than her wedding dress, in a fabric that breathes. A tea length or full length dress in linen, silk or cotton with a clean neckline and a cut you can sit down in. Guests wear colour.

Should the bride wear white to her bridal shower?

Yes. It is expected, and guests are expected to avoid it. White, off white, cream and naturally undyed all read as the bride. The only white to avoid is anything close to your actual wedding dress.

Can you wear a white dress to a bridal shower if you are a guest?

Better not to. White at a shower reads as the bride, the way it does at a wedding. Soft colour, print or a deep neutral is the more generous choice.

How long before my bridal shower should I order a dress?

Ten weeks if it is made to order. Ours ship 3 to 6 weeks from order, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL, and ten weeks leaves room to try it on and exchange within the 10 day window if you need to.

What is the best fabric for a bridal shower dress?

Linen if the shower is outdoors or warm, because it breathes and photographs with texture. Silk and cotton together if you want light on the cloth without the heat of pure silk. Avoid heavy satin in a warm room.

the dress you wear to the shower is the first time you get to be the bride in public. it is allowed to be the one you keep.

With love from Bali,
Myrah
