What to Wear to an Engagement Party: The Guest Guide, and What to Skip
An engagement party asks for cocktail dressing, one step above a good dinner out and a clear step below the wedding itself. Guests should avoid white, ivory and pale blush, which photograph as bridal. A dress, a matched set or a wide leg jumpsuit in a natural fabric and one strong colour is the safest and most considered answer.
The difficulty is that nobody tells you this. The invitation gives the address and the hour and leaves the rest to you, and the party sits between two things you already know how to dress for. Too formal and you look like you misread the night. Too easy and you look like you did not realise it mattered. I am a designer and a Kundalini Yoga teacher in Bali who has made clothing for years for women walking into rooms like this one.
What is the dress code for an engagement party?
Cocktail, unless the invitation says otherwise. In practice that means a midi or full length dress, a matched two piece set, or a wide leg jumpsuit, with shoes you can stand in all evening. Soften it for a home or a garden, sharpen it for a restaurant or a hotel, and if the invitation names a dress code, follow that instead. Our own answers to this night live in Dresses and Gowns.
The useful question is not how formal but how long. These parties run on standing, greeting and photographs, almost none of it seated. That rules out anything you have to manage, and rules in a drawstring instead of a zip, a wide leg instead of a narrow one, and a fabric that moves when you do.
| Where the party is | What to wear | What to skip |
| A home or garden | Linen set, midi dress, flat sandals | Heels that sink, anything floor length |
| A restaurant | Full length gown or silk kaftan, one colour | Denim, logos, anything strapless you must adjust |
| A hotel or venue | Silk, a deep colour, considered jewellery | White in any shade, including blush |
| A beach or warm climate | Bamboo rayon or linen, long sleeve for sun | Heavy synthetics, anything that needs ironing on arrival |
What colour should you wear, and what does white actually rule out?
White is the only real rule, and it reaches further than people expect. Ivory, cream, champagne and pale blush all photograph as bridal under warm light, and this is the first event where that line is drawn. Everything else is yours.
What works in a photograph is a single uninterrupted colour. Prints fight with other people's prints across a group shot, while one deep shade reads as deliberate from across the room. Turmeric gold, botanical rose, clay, dark moon black: the shades we botanically dye in Bali, and the ones I would wear for a night like this.
Which pieces work, piece by piece
Four from Dresses and Gowns, each made by the artisan families who have worked with us from the beginning, each chosen because it survives three hours of standing.
The Virgo Rising Gown ($244) is the one I would reach for first. Long sleeve, deep V neck, front drawstring tie, side slit, cut in 100% bamboo rayon that drapes without clinging. One size fits most. The sleeve gives presence without warmth, which is why it works in a restaurant in winter and a garden in heat.
The Silk Virgo Kaftan ($398) is for the party that deserves the most beautiful thing you own. 100% botanically dyed silk in Turmeric Gold or Botanical Rose, open front, full length. Silk photographs like water, so if the evening is documented properly, this is the piece that carries the light.
The Swan Set ($258) answers the two piece question. Wide leg shorts and an oversized top with a hemline longer at the back, in a French linen and cotton blend that holds its drape. In Moonlight, Black Dark Moon, Rainbeau or Uluwatu Sunset.
The Eva Linen Set Lace Edition ($172 for the top, $219 as a set) is the quietest of the four. 100% French linen with lace sewn into the construction at hem, cuff and neckline rather than added on top. For a daytime party, or the woman who wants the detail to be the only thing she says.
When should you order, and what if the party is soon?
Order ten weeks before the party. Everything we make is cut and sewn to order in Bali, which takes 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL. That window leaves room for an exchange, which is within 10 days of delivery for store credit.
If the party falls sooner, I would rather say it plainly: a piece ordered today cannot be promised for a party in December. Order for the next thing on the calendar instead. We have written the guides for the bridal shower, the rehearsal dinner, and the engagement photographs, which is a different problem with a different answer.
Common Questions About Engagement Party Attire
Can you wear white to an engagement party? As a guest, no. White, ivory, cream and pale blush all read as bridal in photographs, and this is the first event where that line gets drawn. Everything else is open to you: deep green, rust, clay, black, turmeric gold, botanical rose.
Is an engagement party dressier than the wedding? No. It sits one step above a good dinner out and well below the wedding. Dress as though you are being photographed, but not as though you are in the wedding party. A gown you can sit down in for three hours is closer to correct than anything structured.
What should the bride wear to her own engagement party? This is the one night where white is hers to take, and many brides do, as a quiet signal before the dress arrives. A full length gown in a single clean colour, or silk if she wants the photographs to carry light. She will be standing, hugging and photographed all evening, so she wants no waistband to fight and nothing that needs rearranging.
Can you wear a jumpsuit or a two piece set to an engagement party? Yes, and for many women it is the better answer. A wide leg jumpsuit or a matched set reads as considered rather than casual, and it solves the standing and dancing problem a fitted dress does not. The test is the fabric, not the shape: linen, silk or bamboo rayon in one colour always looks more deliberate than a synthetic dress.
How far ahead should I order something made to order for an engagement party? Ten weeks before the party. Our pieces are cut and sewn to order in Bali, which takes 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL. That window leaves room for an exchange if the fit is not right. If the party is sooner, wear something you already own rather than rushing a piece that should not be rushed.
The room will be full of people who love them. Dress like one of them, not like the event.
With love from Bali,
Myrah.

A Piece for This Threshold The Virgo Rising Gown. A long sleeve that falls from a deep V, cinched at the waist with a drawstring you can pull close or leave open. Cut in 100% bamboo rayon, which feels cooler on the skin than cotton at the same temperature. Presence without warmth, which is the whole trick. |
