Semi-Formal, Decoded

the invitation has been on the counter four days, and the only word you cannot settle is the dress code.

Semi-formal wedding attire for women means a polished dress, gown or elevated set that stops short of black tie. A midi or full length cut in silk, linen or cotton, closed or dressy shoes, and jewellery you can wear all evening without thinking about it. One step dressier than a good dinner. One step softer than a ball gown.

What the invitation leaves out: how semi-formal differs from cocktail attire, what to do when the code and the venue disagree, and which pieces in our cocktail and semi-formal dresses collection are cut for this.

What does semi-formal wedding attire mean for women?

It means dressed, not costumed. The code sits in the middle of the scale, and the middle is hardest to read because it is defined by what it is not. The whole scale:

  • Casual or garden party. A sundress or a linen set, flat sandals fine.
  • Semi-formal. A midi or full length dress, a gown in a quiet fabric, or a top and trouser set that reads as one piece. Heels or a low block heel. Most weddings sit here.
  • Cocktail. Semi-formal with the evening turned up. Shorter hems welcome, so is silk, so is black.
  • Formal. Full length is the expectation rather than an option.
  • Black tie. A floor length gown. The couple means it literally.

The test: if you would wear it to a work dinner you were nervous about, it is slightly under. If you would need help getting into it, it is over.

the dress code tells you the register. the venue and the hour tell you the rest.

Is cocktail attire the same as semi-formal?

Almost, and the difference is time of day rather than formality. Cocktail assumes evening, which permits shorter, shinier and darker. Semi-formal covers the whole clock, so a full length linen gown at three in the afternoon reads perfectly, where the same gown in heavy black silk would not.

They overlap far enough that one piece serves both. A silk and cotton dress at mid calf is cocktail at seven and semi-formal at two. On whether black is safe in either, the answer is in can you wear black to a wedding.

What do you wear when the invitation and the venue disagree?

Dress the venue and the hour, not the word. An invitation is written months before anyone has stood in the room, so semi-formal arrives for a garden at four in March and again for a ballroom at seven in November. Not the same instruction.

  • Garden, beach or courtyard, daylight. Linen, cotton, a light silk. Full length covers what grass does to a heel. If the venue is tropical, our Bali wedding guest guide changes the answer.
  • Restaurant, winery or terrace, late afternoon. Mid calf, or a set, with a layer you can take off.
  • Ballroom or members club, evening. Silk, darker, closed shoes. Here semi-formal quietly asks for more than it says.
  • Church or temple, then a reception. Shoulders covered for the ceremony, by the garment or by a jacket.

Four pieces cut for this, and the fabric in each

I am Myrah, a designer and Kundalini Yoga teacher in Bali. Every piece below is hand stitched here by the artisan families who make for this house, each paid a real living wage. Fabric decides whether a dress works in a garden or a ballroom, so it is named piece by piece.

  • The Gloria Dress, silk and cotton, $364. Round neck, deep side pockets, and the one thing silk does that nothing else manages: it returns the light already in the room. Off White Perla for day, Dark Moon Black for evening.
  • The Anusara Evening Set, silk and cotton with lace woven by hand at the cuffs and hems, $328. A top and easy pant in Dark Moon Black that read as one piece, for the woman who does not want a dress.
  • The Oracle Gown, 100% stone washed linen in Moon Milk, $340. High Japanese neckline, sleeveless, a bow at the side, real pockets, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and European Flax certified. Moon Milk is warmer than white, which keeps it clear of the bride.
  • The Silk Virgo Kaftan, 100% botanically dyed silk, $398, in Turmeric Gold or Botanical Rose. One size, open front, full length, and no two lengths of cloth dye identically.

All four sit in the cocktail and semi-formal dresses collection, from $242. If you are the mother of the bride or groom rather than a guest, start with the non-traditional mother of the bride.

What should you not wear to a semi-formal wedding?

White, unless the couple asked for it. Everything else is soft guidance and this one is not. Cream and ivory depend on the bride, and if you have to ask twice, choose the other dress.

Beyond that: not heavy satin at a lunchtime garden wedding, the common overcorrection. Not a hem so short it becomes the subject. Not a shoe you have not walked in. And not something you will never put on again, because a dress worn once is the most expensive dress you will own.

When should you order, if the wedding is this season?

Ten weeks before the wedding. Our pieces are made to order, which means 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL. Ten weeks covers the making, the shipping, and a hem if you want it shorter.

If the wedding is sooner, write to us before you order. Some pieces are finished and ready to leave, and we would rather tell you which. For shorter notice, what to wear to an engagement party covers the same question.

Common questions about semi-formal and cocktail wedding attire

What is semi-formal attire for a woman at a wedding?

A polished dress, gown or elevated set that stops short of black tie. Midi or full length, in silk, linen or cotton, with closed or dressy shoes. One step dressier than a good dinner, one step softer than a ball gown, covering daytime and evening ceremonies alike.

Can I wear a long dress to a semi-formal wedding?

Yes. Full length is fully within semi-formal and is often easier outdoors, where a long hem solves grass, sand and uneven ground at once. Fabric sets the register: linen or a light silk and cotton stays semi-formal, while heavy satin or beading moves it up a band.

What is the difference between cocktail attire and semi-formal attire?

Cocktail attire assumes evening and allows shorter hems, darker colours and more shine. Semi-formal covers the whole day and admits full length and lighter fabric. The overlap is large enough that one well chosen dress satisfies both.

Can I wear trousers to a semi-formal wedding?

Yes, if the pieces read as one outfit rather than two separates. A matched top and trouser set in silk, silk and cotton or fine linen is correct semi-formal dress. A blouse with trousers you own usually is not, because the eye reads it as workwear.

A dress code asks one thing, that you have thought about the day. The rest is yours.

With love from Bali,
Myrah
