the month the almanac tells you to wait
february 2027 is the strangest month in this whole series, and the best day in it is the fifth.
The best day to cut your hair in February 2027 is Friday 5 February. Not because the day officer is unusually strong, though it is a Remove day, but because the day after it the lunar year turns over and the oldest haircut custom in the Chinese calendar closes the door for a month.
Here is the whole month, computed rather than copied, as with January 2027, then the reason the fifth matters more than the almanac alone suggests.
Good and bad haircut days in February 2027
These are the jian chu day officers for February 2027, calculated from the sexagenary day cycle against the Tiger solar month, which opens at Lichun on 4 February at 18:40 Beijing time.
The strongest days. Remove days, the classic cutting days in this system.
- Friday 5 February
- Wednesday 17 February
Also favourable. Success and Open days, good for a trim, a treatment or a colour.
- Monday 1, Sunday 14 and Friday 26 February, all Open days
- Friday 12 and Wednesday 24 February, both Success days
Days to leave alone.
- Wednesday 10 and Monday 22 February are Destruction days, the month breakers, and the two worst dates in the month for anything you want to last
- Thursday 11 and Tuesday 23 February are Danger days
- Tuesday 2, Monday 15 and Saturday 27 February are Close days
One oddity worth naming, because it looks like an error and is not. Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 February are both Establish days. The sequence repeats itself across a solar term boundary, and Lichun falls on the fourth. Every properly calculated almanac shows that doubling.
Why the fifth matters more than the almanac says
Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February, on a new moon at 15:56 UTC. It opens the year of the Fire Goat. The first lunar month runs from that day until 7 March.
And there is a very old, very widely held custom that you do not cut your hair during the first lunar month. In northern China especially, families still get the year-end haircut in the last days of the twelfth month and then leave it alone until the second month opens.
The saying attached to it is blunt to the point of comedy: cutting your hair in the first month brings death to your mother's brother. The explanation most often given is that this is a mishearing rather than a belief. After the Qing queue edict of 1645, men who resented the forced hairstyle were said to keep their hair as a way of missing the old dynasty, si jiu, which sounds almost identical to si jiu meaning the death of an uncle. The phrase survived, the meaning drifted, and the uncles have been carrying it ever since.
Whether or not you find that convincing, the practical shape is the same. February 2027 gives you exactly five days before the door closes, and one of them, Friday 5 February, is a Remove day. That is unusually clean timing.
What the day officers actually are
The jian chu system assigns one of twelve officers to every day, in fixed rotation: Establish, Remove, Full, Balance, Settle, Initiate, Destruction, Danger, Success, Collect, Open, Close. The cycle anchors to the solar month rather than the lunar one, which is why it does not reset at the new moon.
Remove days are for clearing and cutting away. Open and Success days are for anything you want to go well. Destruction, Danger and Close days are the three the almanac steers you off, and the Destruction day in particular is the day whose branch clashes with the month's own, which is why it is called the month breaker. If you want the full logic rather than the dates, what WOFS actually is sets out where these almanacs come from.
Where the feng shui and lunar calendars disagree this month
They part company on the fifth, and it is worth understanding why before you book.
The moon in February 2027 is new on the sixth at 15:56 UTC and full on the twentieth at 23:23 UTC, when the Snow Moon lands at the very start of Virgo. That makes the sixth to the twentieth the waxing half, which is the half the lunar hair calendar for February 2027 puts growth cuts in.
So Friday 5 February sits one day before the new moon, at the very bottom of the waning half. The feng shui almanac calls it the best day of the month. The lunar calendar calls it a shape-holding cut rather than a growth cut. Both are right inside their own system, and neither is measuring anything a dermatologist would recognise, which I have written about plainly in does the moon affect hair growth.
Where they agree is Friday 12, Sunday 14 and Wednesday 17 February. All three are waxing, all three carry a favourable officer, and the seventeenth is a Remove day. If you want a date both traditions bless, take the seventeenth and accept that you are cutting inside the first lunar month.
Common questions about the February 2027 haircut calendar
What is the best day to cut your hair in February 2027?
Friday 5 February. It is a Remove day, the strongest classification in the jian chu system for cutting, and it is the last favourable day before Chinese New Year on 6 February begins the first lunar month, which custom treats as closed to haircuts.
What are the worst days to cut your hair in February 2027?
Wednesday 10 and Monday 22 February, both Destruction days and the month breakers. After those, Thursday 11 and Tuesday 23 as Danger days, and Tuesday 2, Monday 15 and Saturday 27 as Close days.
Why should you not cut your hair in the first lunar month?
It is a folk custom rather than a rule of the almanac. The saying holds that cutting hair in the first lunar month harms your maternal uncle, and the usual explanation is that it descends from a near-homophone dating to the Qing dynasty queue edict of 1645. The first lunar month of 2027 runs from 6 February to 7 March.
When is Chinese New Year 2027?
Saturday 6 February 2027, on a new moon at 15:56 UTC. It begins the year of the Fire Goat. Lichun, the solar marker that opens the Tiger month in the almanac, falls two days earlier on 4 February at 18:40 Beijing time.
Why are 3 and 4 February both Establish days?
Because the officer sequence repeats across a solar term boundary, and Lichun falls on the fourth. The doubling is correct, not a printing error, and it happens once every solar month.
Cut before the year turns, or wait for the second month. Either is a decision. Drifting through February without choosing is the only thing the almanac has no advice for.
