The Gate, Explained

every august the same question arrives in my inbox, so let me answer it plainly.

What the Lion's Gate Portal actually is

The Lion's Gate Portal is the window from roughly July 28 to August 12 each year, when the sun sits in Leo, the sign of the lion, and the star Sirius rises back into the dawn sky after a stretch hidden in the sun's glare. Sirius is the brightest star we can see from Earth. The peak falls on August 8, which is where 8/8 comes from.

The rest of the alignment is the part people find beautiful. Sirius returns alongside the three stars of Orion's Belt, Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka, three points in an almost perfect row. That row corresponds to the layout of the pyramids at Giza, which is not an accident of imagination. The ancient Egyptians tracked the return of Sirius closely, because it announced the flooding of the Nile and with it their new year. Water, fertility, the ground made rich again. A whole civilisation set its calendar by a star coming back.

the star is real, the alignment is real, what you do inside the window is the part that belongs to you

Where the gate sits in the season

The portal does not open out of nowhere. It is the third movement in a sequence that runs through the whole of Leo season, and reading it that way makes the window far more usable.

Leo season opened on July 22. Three days later came the Day Out of Time on July 25, the single day that sits outside the 13-Moon calendar entirely, given over to release and forgiveness. July 26 began the Galactic New Year. Then on July 28 the Lion's Gate opened, peaking on 8/8, and it closes with the total solar eclipse on August 12.

Release, then begin, then build, then reset. If the eight is asking you to claim something, the Day Out of Time was where you were meant to put down whatever you were carrying first. That order is not decorative. It is why the window works better for people who cleared the ground before walking through it.

What 8/8 means, and why 2026 is different

In numerology eight is the number of authority, of structure, of the thing you build and then have to stand behind. It is not the number of luck. It does not hand you anything, it asks you to claim something.

Most coverage this year calls 8/8/2026 a triple eight. Count it again. August is the eighth month, the day is the eighth, the digits of the year reduce to eight, and 2026 carries twenty-six, which also reduces to eight. That is four, not three. I have not seen anyone else counting it this way, and it is the reason this particular year has felt heavier and more insistent than the last few.

What else is moving this year

Jupiter is in Leo for this whole stretch, which tends to expand whatever it touches, and it is moving toward a trine with Saturn. Expansion meeting structure. The wish meeting the work. Then on August 12, four days after the peak, a total solar eclipse lands in Leo, the first eclipse in that sign since 2019. Eclipses tend to close chapters rather than open them gently.

So the shape of the window is: the gate opens, it peaks on the eight, and it ends with a door shutting behind you. That is a useful thing to know in advance.

The honest part

Here is what I will not do, which is tell you the sky is going to rearrange your life. The star is real. The alignment is real and you can look it up. The portal, the sense that this window carries more charge than an ordinary week, is belief and ritual rather than astronomy, and I think it is worth saying so out loud.

What I have found true, over years of marking it, is that a date agreed upon by enough people becomes a real appointment with yourself. That is not nothing. Most of us will not sit down and decide what we are building unless something on the calendar asks us to. The eight asks.

What to actually do with it

Ten quiet minutes before the day gets loud. Write one sentence that begins I am ready to, specific enough that saying it aloud to someone you love would feel a little exposing. Carry it through the day. Write it again at night and notice which word changed.

Then get dressed like the decision is already made. Not louder than you. Just in agreement with you.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Lion's Gate Portal in 2026?

It runs from around July 28 to August 12, 2026, and peaks on Saturday August 8.

Is 8/8/2026 a triple eight or a quadruple eight?

Four. The eighth month, the eighth day, the year reducing to eight, and the twenty-six within it also reducing to eight. Most published coverage counts three and stops early.

What comes before the Lion's Gate Portal?

The Day Out of Time on July 25 and the Galactic New Year on July 26. The portal opens two days later, which is why the Day Out of Time is traditionally treated as the clearing that makes the gate usable.

Do I have to do a ritual?

No. A sentence written honestly and kept for a day does more than an elaborate ceremony you perform and forget.

What happens after the portal closes?

The total solar eclipse in Leo on August 12 closes the window. Eclipses tend to end things decisively, so it is a good moment to finish what you started rather than begin something new.

The gate will close the way it opened, quietly, without asking permission. What you did inside it is the only part that stays.

With love from Bali,
Myrah
