The Number After the Dot

In a Gene Keys profile, the number after the dot is the line. Written 58.6, it means Gene Key 58, line 6. The key names which of the 64 themes you are working with. The line describes how that theme expresses itself, and there are six of them.

the question that arrives in my inbox most often is not what a gene key means. it is what the little number after the decimal point is doing there.

Where the line number comes from

This part is arithmetic, and knowing it makes the profile less mysterious.

The Gene Keys divide the ecliptic into 64, following the hexagrams of the I Ching, giving each key 5.625 degrees of sky. Every hexagram has six lines, so each key is divided again into six, and each line occupies 0.9375 of a degree. Sixty-four keys times six lines makes 384 possible positions on the wheel.

When a planet in your chart falls inside one of those slices, you get two numbers: the key, and the line within it. That is all the dot is doing.

Why you have a long list of lines, not two

This is where people coming from Human Design get caught.

In Human Design you have one profile, two numbers with a slash between them, drawn from the Sun and Earth and written as 3/5 or 4/6. Twelve combinations exist and you have exactly one. We took that apart in Human Design profile lines, explained, including what each of the six lines is called.

The Gene Keys do something different with the same chart. Every sphere carries its own key and its own line. Life's Work has one. Evolution has one. Radiance, Purpose, Attraction, Vocation, all of them. So a full profile is not two numbers, it is a column of them, which is why people arrive at a search engine holding something like 58.6, 52.6, 48.2, 21.2, 19.3 and no idea what to do with it.

You are not meant to read the column. You are meant to read one line, in one sphere, slowly.

The same line reads differently in each sphere

This is the part almost nobody explains, and it is the whole reason the line numbers are worth knowing.

A line is a how. A sphere is a where. Line 3 is described across both systems as the one that learns by trying, breaking and trying differently, so what looks like a string of failures from outside is the method working. But line 3 in your Life's Work sphere and line 3 in your Attraction sphere are not the same life at all.

In Life's Work it says the work itself gets built by trial and error, and the false starts are the apprenticeship rather than evidence you chose wrong. In Attraction it says your relationships form the same way, through contact and collision, and the pattern is not a character flaw.

Same mechanism. Different arena, and a completely different thing to forgive yourself for.

So reading a sphere means reading three coordinates at once. The sphere sets the domain. The key names the spectrum running from Shadow through Gift to Siddhi. The line describes the manner. The key numbers landed first. The lines were the part that told us how those themes behave on a Tuesday.

How to find your own line numbers

A free profile from the official Gene Keys site returns the notation already formatted, key and line, sphere by sphere. You need birth date, birth time and birth place, the same three inputs an astrology chart uses.

Birth time matters more here than people expect, and the arithmetic says why. A line is only 0.9375 of a degree wide. The Sun moves roughly 0.99 degrees a day, so a Sun-based line holds for about 22.8 hours. The Moon moves roughly 13.2 degrees a day, so a Moon-based line lasts about 1.7 hours. An hour of error can hand you the wrong line on any sphere the Moon touches.

If your birth time is a family estimate rather than a document, treat the fast-moving lines as a draft.

The honest caveat

The Gene Keys have no peer-reviewed evidence base, and neither do the line archetypes, which arrive through the I Ching by way of Human Design rather than through research. Richard Rudd has always been open that the system came to him during a period of heightened consciousness in the early 2000s. The descriptions are also written in the kind of evocative, spectrum-shaped language that produces recognition whether or not it fits.

What the lines are good for is narrower. They give you a way to describe your own method without apologising for it. If you have spent years believing your false starts were wasted, a framework that calls them the method is worth an evening, whether or not anybody can measure it.
