Winter Wedding Guest Dress: What to Wear, What to Layer, and When to Order
A winter wedding asks for two things a summer one never does: a reason to stay inside the dress all evening, and a plan for the walk from the car to the door.
For a winter wedding as a guest, wear something floor length or midi in a fabric with some weight, such as silk or handwoven cotton, with a long sleeve or a layer you can keep on indoors. Choose a deeper colour for an evening ceremony, avoid white and ivory, and bring a proper coat for outside.
I am Myrah Penaloza, a designer and Kundalini Yoga teacher in Bali, where it is never winter, so I will be plain about what our pieces can and cannot do in the cold. Most winter weddings happen indoors. The hours that matter are spent in a warm room, and the cold is the ten minutes between the car and the door. Dress for the room, and plan for the door. Every piece named here lives in our Dresses and Gowns collection.
What should you wear to a winter wedding as a guest?
Wear length, a sleeve or a layer, and colour with some depth. A floor-length gown covers the legs on the walk in and reads as formal in a candlelit room. A long sleeve, or a layer you are happy to keep on, means you are not choosing between warmth and the dress. And a deeper colour suits a winter evening far better than the pale tones of June.
The one rule that does not bend with the season is white. White, ivory and off-white belong to the bride in December exactly as they do in summer.
Which fabrics actually work for a winter wedding?
Silk and handwoven cotton work best, because both carry some weight and both read as dressed. Lightweight linen and bamboo rayon are beautiful, but they are made to keep you cool, so in winter they need a layer. Fabric by fabric:
| Fabric | Holds warmth | Best worn as |
|---|---|---|
| Silk | A little, for its weight | The dress itself, for an evening ceremony |
| Cotton silk | A little | An evening piece over a slip |
| Handwoven cotton | Some, it has real weight | A long layer you keep on |
| Bamboo rayon | Almost none, it runs cool | A long-sleeved gown under a coat |
| Lightweight linen | Almost none | Layered, or kept for spring |
If you love linen and want to keep wearing it through the colder months, there is a whole guide to wearing linen in winter, with the weights to buy and how to layer them.
Is a long dress or a kaftan right for a winter wedding?
Yes. A long dress is usually the better choice in winter, and a kaftan, worn full length, is one of the easiest ways to look dressed without fuss. These are the three pieces I would choose.
For the ceremony itself. The Silk Virgo Kaftan is 100% silk, botanically dyed, full length and open at the front, in Turmeric Gold or Botanical Rose. Wear it over a slip. Silk holds a little warmth and catches candlelight in a way linen never will, and the turmeric gold reads as celebration in a winter room. It is $398.
For a long sleeve. The Virgo Rising Gown is the long-sleeve edition of the Virgo silhouette, in 100% bamboo rayon, with a deep V, a front drawstring tie and a side slit. Choose Dark Moon or Clay rather than White for a wedding. Bamboo rayon runs cool, so the sleeve gives you coverage and presence, not heat. Wear it indoors and put a coat over it outside. It is $244.
For an evening wedding. The Meera Tabriz Kaftan is handwoven cotton silk in black, sheer by design, so for a wedding wear it over a slip. It is dyed slowly by hand, so the depth of black varies a little from piece to piece. It is $498.
You can see these alongside every other long piece in our Dresses and Gowns collection.
How do you stay warm at a winter wedding without hiding the dress?
Plan the layers in this order:
- A proper coat for outside. Long enough to cover a floor-length hem, and taken off at the door.
- A layer you are happy to keep on. A wrap or a long open piece over the shoulders for a cool room.
- Something warm underneath. A fine slip or a thin base layer adds warmth without showing.
- Closed shoes and tights for a midi length, or a shoe that grips if there may be ice.
For the evening after, the same thinking carries into what to wear for New Year's Eve.
When should you order a dress for a winter wedding?
Order about ten weeks before the wedding. Every piece is made to order: 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL. That time is the making, not a delay. An order placed in late October suits a wedding in January or February well. For a wedding in December, I would rather tell you now than disappoint you later: the timing can no longer be promised.

Common Questions About Winter Wedding Guest Dresses
What should I wear to a winter wedding as a guest? Wear something floor length or midi in a fabric with some weight, such as silk or handwoven cotton, with a long sleeve or a layer you can keep on indoors. Choose a deeper colour for an evening ceremony, avoid white and ivory, and bring a proper coat for the walk outside.
Can you wear a long dress to a winter wedding? Yes, and a long dress is usually the better choice in winter. A floor-length gown keeps your legs covered on the walk in, reads as formal in an evening room, and pairs easily with a coat. Midi works too, with tights and a closed shoe.
Can you wear white to a winter wedding? No. White, ivory and off-white are kept for the bride at a winter wedding just as at a summer one. If a piece comes in several colourways, choose the deeper one, and treat any white layer as something to leave at home.
Is silk warm enough for a winter wedding? Silk holds a little warmth for its weight and drapes well, which is why it suits an indoor winter ceremony. It is not a coat. Wear it for the room, and put a real coat over it for the time you spend outside.
When should I order a dress for a winter wedding? Order about ten weeks ahead. Our pieces are made to order, so they take 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL. An order placed in late October suits a January or February wedding, but cannot be promised in time for one in December.
Dress for the room where the vows are said. The cold is only the walk to the door.
With love from Bali,
Myrah.
