Gifts for the Woman Who Has Everything: What to Give, and What She Actually Keeps

The best gifts for the woman who has everything are the things she cannot buy twice: one handmade piece, made slowly, in a small run, by people whose names you can learn. She does not need another object. She needs something with a maker's hands still visible in it.

I am Myrah Penaloza, a designer and Kundalini Yoga teacher in Bali, and I have been on both sides of this problem. I have been given beautiful things I never used, and I have watched a woman wear one of our gowns to three of the most important days of her life. The difference was never the price. It was whether the gift had a story she could tell and a use she already had. Every piece named below sits in our silks collection.

What do you give a woman who has everything?

Give her the one category she cannot already own. Mass production is very good at the next clever object, and a woman with taste and means has met all of them. What it cannot make is a garment sewn by one pair of hands in a run of ten, dyed in a bath that never lands the same way twice.

That is practical rather than romantic. Our botanical dyes are plant pigments applied by hand in small batches, so two pieces from the same run are never identical. There is a guide to telling whether clothing is really plant dyed, written so you can test us as easily as anyone else.

Why does one handmade piece land better than five clever objects?

Because she is not short of things. She is short of room, and short of reasons. A gift that arrives with a maker, a place and a number attached gives her something to say when someone asks, and that is most of what a gift does after the first week.

There is a duller reason too. A candle burns down and a gadget is charged once. A gown goes to a wedding, then a dinner, then an ordinary Tuesday.

Four pieces she will actually keep

These four are the ones I would send, all verified in stock as I write, with our prices in US dollars. See them beside every other silk piece in our silks collection.

  • $244, the layer she will reach for most. The Gloria Jacket in silk and cotton, semi sheer by design, with an oversized sleeve and small Japanese style buttons. It answers the restaurant colder than the street and goes over almost everything she owns. Off White Perla or Dark Moon Black, S/M and M/L.
  • $328, the one for the evening at home. The Anusara Evening Set, a silk and cotton top and pant in Dark Moon Black, with lace woven by hand at the cuffs and hems and a back that opens to a single tie. Ten sets in this run, so the lace falls differently on each.
  • $364, the safest guess if you are guessing. The Gloria Dress in silk and cotton, round neck, deep side pockets, in Off White Perla or Dark Moon Black. The round neck leaves room for whatever she wears at her throat, which matters for a woman who already owns jewellery she loves. Here is what silk cotton actually is.
  • $398, the ceremony piece. The Silk Virgo Kaftan, 100% silk, botanically dyed in Turmeric Gold or Botanical Rose, full length and open at the front, one size. For the woman with a rail of good clothes and nothing that feels like an occasion.

What should you not give her?

This list is shorter and more useful.

  • Anything that needs storing. She is managing a house that is already full.
  • A second version of something she loves. She chose the first one carefully. A duplicate reads as a guess.
  • Jewellery, unless you have been told exactly what. It is the most personal category and the hardest to return.
  • A subscription she must remember to cancel. A chore wearing a bow.
  • Anything described only as handcrafted. If a brand will not name the fibre, the maker or the wage, the word is decoration.

When do you need to order, and what about December?

Everything we make is cut and sewn to order by artisan families in Bali, so the wait is the making rather than a delay. Lead time is 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL. Shipping is free worldwide over $350.

So I should be plain if you are reading this in late October. A made-to-order piece will not be under a tree on 24 December. Our last safe order date for delivery by 24 December was 22 October. For December, give a digital gift card and let her choose and order in January, when the house is quiet. For a birthday or a milestone later in the year, ten weeks ahead leaves room to spare. Exchanges are ten days from delivery for store credit, with no cash refunds.

If she teaches, there is a separate guide to gifts for yoga teachers, chosen on a different test entirely.

Common Questions About Gifts for the Woman Who Has Everything

What do you buy for a woman who has everything? Buy one handmade thing rather than several clever ones. A piece made slowly, in a small run, by people you can name, is the one category she cannot already own, because it was not mass produced and cannot be bought twice. Choose the garment, the cloth and the maker, not the novelty.

What is a good gift for a woman who has everything and says she wants nothing? She usually means she wants nothing more to store. Give something she will use and wear out rather than keep in a box: a garment, a repair, a night away. Anything that becomes part of her days instead of an object on a shelf.

How much should you spend on a gift for a woman who has everything? Spend less on how many and more on how good. One piece in the $240 to $500 range is the band where clothing becomes genuinely well made rather than merely new. Below that, a gift card toward a piece she chooses herself is more honest than a small compromise.

Which brands are best for gifting if you care where the cloth came from? Look for a brand that names the fibre piece by piece, says who sewed it and how they are paid, and tells you the size of the run. Words like handcrafted mean nothing alone. Our pieces are sewn by around thirty Balinese artisan families, in their own homes and in workshops the tailors own, all paid a real living wage.

Can a made-to-order gift arrive in time for Christmas? Not if you are ordering in late October. Our pieces take 3 to 6 weeks from order to shipment, then 5 to 15 business days with DHL, and our last safe order date for 24 December delivery was 22 October. For December, give a digital gift card and let her order in January.

The gift she keeps is rarely the cleverest one. It is the one that had a person in it.

With love from Bali,
Myrah.
