The Day the Corridor Closes

Written on the morning of the second eclipse, before the sky here did anything at all.

It is Friday in Bali and the light is completely ordinary. Warm, a little white, the kind that flattens the terraces until forty small fields look like one. In about two hours the moon slips into the earth's shadow and the corridor that opened on the twelfth of August closes behind us. We will see none of it. At 12:18 this afternoon our time the moon sits seventy two degrees below the horizon, directly beneath our feet, on the other side of the world. It rises tonight at 18:26 already finished. Already just a full moon in Pisces and nothing more.

I like that far more than I expected to.

"Some things finish without asking to be watched."

Sixteen days. That is the whole length of it. A total solar eclipse in Leo on the twelfth, and today a lunar eclipse at four degrees of Pisces, with the sun sitting at the same four degrees of Virgo across from it. Two ends of one axis, sixteen days apart, sealed at lunchtime while I was almost certainly standing at the sink.

What a corridor actually is

People talk about eclipse season as though it were weather, something that arrives and is survived. It is closer to a hallway. Two doors, an unlit stretch between them, and no reliable way to know how far along you are until you reach the second door and it shuts. The information is always retrospective. That is not a flaw in the tradition. It is the tradition being honest about what it can and cannot tell you.

Which means today is not a day for deciding anything. It is a day for looking back down the hallway and noticing what came with you.

The question I ask on the closing day

Not what did I manifest. I have written about that already and my answer has not changed. The question I ask is smaller and more useful: what have I stopped arguing with?

Sixteen days ago I was still negotiating with three things. Today two of them are simply facts I live beside, and the third I am still gripping. I did not decide any of that. Nothing was resolved. The negotiation just went quiet in two places and stayed loud in the third, and the shutting of the door is what let me see which was which.

Pisces asks for the thing you cannot argue with

The first eclipse was in Leo, and Leo wants a position. A clear one, held in daylight, with your name on it. Pisces at the other end wants something almost opposite. Not a position at all. A dissolving of the line you drew, so that the two things you were holding apart can sit in the same room without one of them having to be wrong.

This is the part I find hardest. I am built to resolve. Give me two truths and I will spend a week trying to work out which one is the real one, when the honest answer is usually that both are, and the work is holding them.

What I am doing with the rest of today

Very little, deliberately. No launches, no decisions, no difficult conversations booked. I will go down to the water in the late afternoon and be there when the moon comes up over the ridge at half past six, already whole again, having done its work somewhere I could not see.

And then tomorrow, ordinary Saturday. The corridor closed while I was making lunch. That feels like the correct scale for it.

If you are reading this somewhere the eclipse was visible, I hope you looked. If you are somewhere like here, where it happened underfoot at midday, I hope you let it. Not everything that changes you needs to be witnessed to count.

A Piece for This Threshold

French Linen Yin Yang River Playsuit

Wide leg, long, built for movement, in French linen that is heavier than standard linen and falls accordingly. The Yin Yang is applied by hand rather than printed, so no two pieces carry it in quite the same place. It does not promise balance. It promises the dignity of holding two true things at once, which is the only thing a Pisces eclipse has ever asked of anyone.
