Standing at the Threshold: What the Solstice Wants You to Know

A woman sits barefoot on a light-colored surface, leaning against a white wall. She wears the black Kundalini Linen Playsuit with wide-leg bottoms from Myrah Penaloza, paired with a matching wide-brimmed hat. Her hair is styled in loose waves with bangs, and she looks directly at the camera with a neutral expression.

Written from Bali, five days before the solstice.

There is a particular quality to the air here in the days before June 21st. The light arrives earlier and stays longer than it should. The birds seem more urgent. And I find myself sitting with my tea in the garden, unable to shake the feeling that something is about to shift — not just in the sky, but inside me.

"The solstice is not an event. It is an invitation."

The Summer Solstice — June 21st — is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. In Bali, where the sun is constant and the seasons tell themselves through rain and stillness rather than warmth and cold, I feel it differently. Something about the peak of solar energy makes even the tropics feel electrified. Full. Almost too full.

What the Solstice Is Really About

In astrology, the solstice is a cardinal threshold. The sun moves into Cancer — the sign of the home, the mother, the deep interior. After months of expansion (Aries' spark, Taurus' rooting, Gemini's gathering), the solstice asks us to turn inward. It is a paradox: the most illuminated day of the year, and the one that calls us most deeply into ourselves.

The Shadow Side of Summer

We are taught to celebrate summer as pure brightness. But the solstice holds both. From this peak point onward, the days begin to shorten again — slowly, almost imperceptibly. Cancer season knows this. It is why this sign rules memory, nostalgia, the things we hold close. The solstice is a moment of fullness that already contains its own turning.

If you have been feeling emotional lately — more tender than usual, more sensitive, more quietly hungry for something you cannot name — this is why. The cosmic weather is asking you to sit with what is full in you. Not to fix it. Not yet. Just to feel the weight of it.

A Ritual for the Solstice Threshold

In the days around June 21st, I invite you to try this: spend fifteen minutes in the earliest morning light you can find. Not scrolling. Not planning. Just standing in it — or sitting, if that feels more like you. Let the light touch your face and ask yourself one question: What am I ready to bring into fullness? Not what you want to accomplish. What you are ready to step into. There is a difference, and your body knows it.

Cancer Season and Your Body

Cancer rules the chest, the stomach, the womb space. It is the sign of nourishment and feeling. During Cancer season, hair care rituals take on a new resonance — caring for yourself from crown to root is a form of self-mothering. Oil your scalp slowly. Let your hair dry in the sun. These are not luxury acts. In Cancer season, they are medicine.

What I Am Wearing at the Threshold

There are pieces of clothing I reach for when I want to feel held. When I want to walk through something significant and still feel like myself. The linen playsuit has become that piece for me. There is something about the weight of it, the way it settles on the shoulders, the way linen breathes even in heat. It makes even threshold moments feel grounded. Like you can step through the solstice door and still know exactly who you are.

Hold the threshold gently this week. Something beautiful is turning.

With love from Bali,
Myrah.
