The Playlist Before the Portal

before the sky did anything, the shop already knew.

What was playing before we called it eclipse season

This is not this month's playlist. It is the one before it, the one that was already running through July while none of us had a name yet for what was building. I called it Shifting the Tide, and by the time I gave it that name, the tide had already started. Lion's Gate opened on August 8. The total solar eclipse in Leo followed four days after that. Neither date caused the shift. They just gave a name to something the shop had been playing into for weeks already.

If you read last week's letter about the eclipse playlist, think of this as its older sibling. Six mantras held one narrow, specific frequency, on purpose. This one does not hold still. It runs for hours, because a real day at the shop does not hold one mood for hours either.

A few of what was on it

Shifting the Tide runs one hundred and nineteen songs deep, which is too many to print here, so this is a taste, not the whole thing.

  • It's Peaceful, by Marti Nikko, DJ Drez, and Domonic Dean Breaux
  • Prayer Wheel, by MC YOGI
  • Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu, by Marti Nikko, DJ Drez, Sheela Bringi, and Brent Kuecker
  • Raíz, by Bomba Estéreo
  • lovely, by Billie Eilish and Khalid
  • Higher Love, by Kygo and Whitney Houston
  • Here Comes the Sun, by LEFT.
  • Cumbia a la Luna, by Joaquín Cornejo

You can listen to the whole thing on Spotify here, all hundred and nineteen songs, exactly as it played in the shop.

a shop does not hold one feeling for eight hours straight. neither do you. this playlist was built to admit that.

Why this one is allowed to wander

Every song on the eclipse list was chosen for the same reason, to bring my own nervous system back to one specific frequency. Shifting the Tide was built differently, because July was built differently. Mornings opened quiet, prayer wheel, sacred chant, the shop still cool. By afternoon the heat had its way with everyone and the music followed it, cumbia, Bomba Estéreo, something with a hip in it. By the time the light turned gold and the last fitting of the day walked out the door, it was Billie Eilish or Whitney Houston, whatever the room actually felt like instead of what a ritual said it should feel like. I stopped fighting that a long time ago. Some music is medicine. Some music is just honest company for a long day.

What it carried us into

This is the playlist that ran underneath the last weeks of Leo season, into the day I later learned was four eights and not three (I wrote about that properly in Lion's Gate Portal 2026), and into the total solar eclipse that followed four days after that, the one behind last week's playlist letter. None of that was audible yet in July. It just felt like the ground moving a little faster than usual, and this was what I reached for while it did.

An honest note. This one was not built with the same discipline as the eclipse list. It grew the way a real playlist grows, one song added because a customer asked what was playing, one because I needed to survive a Tuesday, one because Robindra put it on and I never took it off. It is less tidy than what I usually share here. I decided to share it anyway.

If last week's letter was the sound of arriving somewhere, this is the sound of the road that got us there. Listen to whichever one meets you where you actually are.

With love from Bali,
Myrah
