How long it takes to reach you
Three to six weeks from the day you order to the day it arrives. Your piece is made after you order it, which takes 14 to 28 days, and then travels from Bali by DHL, which takes 5 to 15 business days. A botanically dyed colourway adds 10 to 14 days on top, because the cloth sits in the dye before a single seam is sewn.
That is the honest answer, and it is longer than most of the internet has trained you to expect. What follows is where every one of those days actually goes, so you can decide whether the timing works before you order rather than after.
How long does shipping take from Bali?
It helps to separate two things that get collapsed into one word. Shipping is the transit. Lead time is the making. Almost all of the wait is the making, and none of it is a warehouse.
| Stage | How long | What is happening |
|---|---|---|
| Making | 14 to 28 days | Your piece is cut and sewn to order by one of around thirty artisan families in Bali |
| Botanical dye, if your colourway uses it | Add 10 to 14 days | The cloth sits in turmeric, indigo or native Balinese botanicals before construction begins |
| Dispatch and tracking | Within 5 days of shipping | Your tracking number arrives by email |
| Transit | 5 to 15 business days | DHL from Bali to you, plus your local customs clearance |
| Total, typical | 3 to 6 weeks | Roughly 8 weeks at the outside for a botanical colourway |
Why does it take weeks rather than days?
Because nothing is sitting on a shelf waiting for you. We make almost nothing before it is ordered, in runs of tens rather than thousands, which is the single decision that removes overproduction from the business. There is no stockroom, so there is nothing to pick and pack. There is only a person who has not started yet.
That person also sets their own hours. Around half our makers work from their own homes and half from small workshops the artisan tailors own and run themselves, and the work happens around school runs, ceremonies and family life. We quote a longer lead time rather than compress the making, and our published timings exist to protect the maker rather than to manage you.
What does shipping cost, and when is it free?
Everything ships with DHL and tracking as standard. Free over $350 USD to most destinations.
| Destination | Under $350 | $350 and over |
|---|---|---|
| Indonesia | Free | Free |
| United States | $9.99 | Free |
| Canada | $15 | Free |
| Mexico | $15 | Free |
| Asia | $15 | Free |
| Australia and New Zealand | $18 | Free |
| United Kingdom and Europe | $25 | Free |
| Rest of world | $32 | Free |
The Asia zone covers Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, China, India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei and Macau. Everywhere else ships at the rest of world rate.
All figures in USD, and all against your order total. Full detail lives on the shipping page.
Who pays duty and customs?
You do, where your country charges it, and you pay DHL directly rather than us. DHL will text you the amount and how to settle it. We cannot calculate it in advance because it depends on your country's threshold and category rules, and we would rather say that than guess at a number you will be held to.
Checked and correct as of September 2026. Anyone publishing a customs claim without a date is publishing something that may already be wrong, so here is ours, dated.
| Where you are | What to expect |
|---|---|
| United States | The $800 duty-free de minimis exemption was suspended in August 2025 and remains suspended. Low value parcels that used to arrive with nothing to pay are now subject to duty. Expect a DHL charge on most orders. |
| United Kingdom | VAT applies to imported goods. Customs duty relief below £135 still applies for now, though it is scheduled to be removed by March 2029. |
| European Union | VAT applies to all imports. The €150 duty exemption is being phased out, with a small per item customs charge introduced from July 2026 on parcels below that value. |
| Australia and New Zealand | GST applies to imported goods. Duty applies above a higher value threshold. Your carrier will confirm the exact figure. |
| Everywhere else | Varies. DHL will tell you at delivery. |
The rate itself depends on the fibre, how the garment is constructed and the trade arrangement in force between your country and Indonesia. Both have moved more than once since 2025, which is why we are not going to print a percentage that will be stale before you read it. DHL will give you the exact number.
One thing worth knowing before it happens. If duty is refused and DHL returns the parcel to Bali, we will gladly send it again, and a re-shipping fee will apply, at the standard shipping rate for your zone. Nobody enjoys that conversation, and it is entirely avoidable by expecting the message.
What can hold your order up?
Two things, both fixable in thirty seconds before you order rather than a week after.
- A missing mobile number. DHL will not deliver without one. If you did not add one at checkout, email support@myrahpenaloza.com with it and we will attach it to your order before it ships.
- A PO box address. We cannot ship to one. Send us a street address instead and nothing is lost.
After that, the honest variables are your local customs queue and the weather over the Java Sea, neither of which we control. We make no guarantee on an exact delivery date, and any brand shipping internationally that does is guessing.
Frequently asked questions
How long does shipping take from Bali?
Five to fifteen business days in transit with DHL once your parcel leaves Bali, plus your local customs clearance. Because every piece is made after you order it, the full wait from order to delivery is typically three to six weeks: 14 to 28 days to make the garment, then 5 to 15 business days to ship it.
Why does my order take 14 to 28 days before it ships?
Because it does not exist yet when you order it. Every piece is cut and sewn to order by one of around thirty Balinese artisan families, about half working from their own homes and half from small workshops the tailors own themselves. There is no warehouse stock to pick from, and makers set their own hours, so we quote a lead time that protects the maker rather than compressing the work.
How much longer do botanically dyed pieces take?
Add 10 to 14 days. Botanical colourways sit in turmeric, indigo or native Balinese botanicals before construction begins, and the dye cannot be hurried. This takes the full order-to-door time to roughly eight weeks at the outside.
How much does shipping cost, and when is it free?
Shipping is free on orders over $350 USD. Below that, a flat rate applies by zone: free within Indonesia, $9.99 to the United States, $15 to Canada, Mexico and Asia, $18 to Australia and New Zealand, $25 to the United Kingdom and Europe, and $32 to the rest of the world. All orders ship with DHL and tracking as standard.
Do I have to pay customs duty?
Where your country charges it, yes, and you pay DHL directly rather than paying us. DHL will send you a text message with the amount and instructions. As of September 2026 the United States has suspended its $800 duty-free de minimis exemption, so US orders that once arrived with nothing to pay now usually attract duty. The UK and EU charge VAT on imports, with their low-value duty reliefs currently being phased out. If duty is refused and the parcel is returned to Bali, we will re-ship it and a re-shipping fee will apply, at the standard shipping rate for your zone.
When will I get my tracking number?
By email within five days of your order shipping. You can follow the parcel on 17track.net or through DHL using the shipper's reference. Once your shipping notification has arrived, DHL is the fastest route for any delivery question.
Can you ship to a PO box?
No. DHL requires a street address, and a mobile phone number, to deliver. If either is missing from your order, email support@myrahpenaloza.com and we will update it before your piece ships.
Can I get my order faster?
Not usually, and we would rather say so than take the order and disappoint you. The making is the part that takes time and it is done by hand by a person who is not on a shift. If you have a fixed date, email us before you order with the date and the piece and we will tell you honestly whether it can be met.
With love from Bali,
Myrah
