Why We Keep Checking When Nothing Is There: Finding Your Ithaca Again

The Edit · Odyssey

The Addiction to Maybe

last cup. then I will let you go.

You already know there is nothing in there. You checked four minutes ago. You check again anyway, and I want to talk about why, because for a long time I assumed the answer was that I lacked discipline.

It is not that.

The reason is that it sometimes works

If your phone gave you something wonderful every single time you opened it, you would get bored of it eventually. And if it never gave you anything, you would stop.

The pull comes from the fact that it is unpredictable. Sometimes there is a message from someone you love. Usually there is nothing. You cannot tell in advance which one this is, and that uncertainty is exactly what makes the reaching persistent.

It is not a slot machine because every pull pays out. It is a slot machine because the next one might.

the hand keeps reaching, even when the last ten pulls gave nothing.

What that does over time

A few things, and none of them are dramatic on any given day, which is why they are easy to miss.

The phone gets opened before you have decided to open it, usually while waking, waiting, eating or going to bed. Focus fragments, and the cost is not really the minutes spent, it is the number of times attention gets broken and has to start again. And stillness starts to feel like a problem that needs solving instead of a thing you can just be inside.

That last one is the one I would watch. When you can no longer be bored, you have lost access to something that most good ideas come out of.

A word on what I am not saying

I want to be careful here, because this subject attracts a lot of overclaiming.

Dopamine is not a simple pleasure chemical, whatever you have read. It is bound up in learning, motivation and prediction, and the strongest pull often happens before anything arrives, in the anticipating. What is fair to say is that these systems can engage real reward-learning mechanisms that make checking feel urgent. What is not fair to say is that everyone with a phone has a medical addiction, or that one chemical explains any of us.

Ithaca is the point, not the phone

Here is where the myth earns its place.

Odysseus does not leave Calypso's island through willpower. He builds a raft. The leaving requires an actual object, made with his hands, over days.

Which means the work was never only put down the lotus. It was build a route home. And you cannot build a route without knowing where home is.

So the question underneath all of this is not how do I use my phone less. It is what am I not doing while I am in there. The book. The friendship that has gone quiet. The work that needs a long unbroken afternoon. The body that wants moving. Ithaca is not a place at the end of the story, it is the thing he keeps choosing while everything offers him reasons to stop.

The raft, practically

Environment beats intention every time. Every one of these makes the good choice easier rather than asking you to be stronger.

  • Notifications off for everything that is not a person
  • The compulsive apps off your home screen, so opening them takes a decision
  • The phone charging outside the bedroom
  • Two protected windows: the first half hour awake, and meals
  • One replacement ritual, so the hand has somewhere to go. Tea. A walk. Ten minutes of writing

That last one matters more than the restrictions. Removing the habit without replacing it just leaves a hole that the habit comes back to fill.

And when the urge arrives anyway

Notice it. Feel where it sits in your body, because it usually has a location. Name the feeling. Ten breaths. Then choose.

Mindfulness is not being peaceful. It is the gap between the urge and the hand, and the gap is trainable.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I keep checking my phone when there is nothing there?

Because the reward is unpredictable. When something good arrives only occasionally and you cannot predict when, checking becomes persistent and can continue through many empty checks. The pull comes from the possibility rather than the payoff.

Is scrolling actually an addiction?

For most people, no. Some app features can engage reward-learning mechanisms that make checking feel urgent, and some people do experience genuinely problematic use, but that is not the same as a medical addiction. Phones also carry work, family and connection, and treating all use as pathology is not accurate or helpful.

What does Ithaca represent in The Odyssey?

Home, and everything home stands for: identity, purpose, relationships, the life someone is trying to return to. It is usually read less as a destination than as the value Odysseus keeps choosing while every distraction offers him a reason to stop.

What is the best way to reduce screen time?

Change the environment rather than relying on willpower. Turn off nonessential notifications, remove apps from the home screen, keep the phone out of the bedroom, and protect two daily windows. Add a replacement ritual so the impulse has somewhere else to go.

How long does it take to break the habit?

There is no fixed number, and anyone quoting one is guessing. A practical approach is to observe your triggers for a couple of days before changing anything, then remove cues, then add structure, and review after a week to keep what worked.

He did not become immune to any of it. He heard the song, he wanted the island, he grieved on that beach for seven years. He went home anyway, slowly, by building the thing that would carry him.

You do not need to be stronger than the pull. You need a raft, and somewhere to point it.

With love from Bali,
Myrah
