I want to tell you the part of the story that stopped me, because I think it is the part nobody mentions when they talk about the Sirens.

They do not shriek. They do not drag anyone overboard. In Book 12 they sing, and what they sing is Odysseus's own name and the promise that if he comes closer he will know more than he knows now. That is the whole trap. They did not offer him something foreign. They offered him a slightly better version of the thing he already wanted to be.

Why I am thinking about this in August

Two reasons, and they are tangled.

The first is that Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey came out on July 17, so half the women I know have Odysseus on the brain right now. The second is that we are sitting inside a corridor of two eclipses. A total solar eclipse in Leo on August 12, with the path of totality crossing northern Spain and western Iceland and totality lasting two minutes and eighteen seconds. Then a partial lunar eclipse in Pisces on August 28, with over ninety per cent of the moon in shadow.

Eclipse corridors do a specific thing to attention. They loosen it. Information arrives faster than usual, decisions feel more urgent than they are, and the part of you that would normally wait gets impatient. Which is precisely when a song that sounds like your own name becomes hardest to sail past.

The song has your name in it too

Here is what I find honest about the myth. The Sirens did not need to be universally attractive. They only needed to know what was attractive to him.

Your feed works the same way, and this is not a moral failing on your part, it is a design achievement on theirs. If you make things, it pulls you with numbers. If you are lonely, it pulls you with notifications. If you are comparing, it pulls you with somebody's kitchen. If you are anxious, it pulls you with one more update that might settle you and never does.

It does not present itself as distraction. It presents itself as information, as relevance, as staying informed. That is the song.

What Odysseus actually did, which is the useful part

He did not white-knuckle it. This is the detail I keep coming back to.

He knew he would want to steer toward the rocks, so he made the decision before he was in the water. Wax in the crew's ears. Himself tied to the mast. And the instruction that mattered most: if I beg you to untie me, tie me tighter.

He did not trust future Odysseus. He built something that would hold when his willpower did not. That is not weakness. That is the only strategy in the story that works.

Your mast, for these two weeks

Not a detox. Not a cleanse. Just something to be tied to while the corridor is loud.

• Notifications off for anything that is not a human being you love
• The phone charging somewhere other than your bedroom, especially the nights of the twelfth and the twenty-eighth
• The first thirty minutes after waking belong to you, not to the feed
• One window a day for checking, chosen in advance rather than whenever the wanting arrives
• Anything you feel certain about on an eclipse day, write down and reread on the thirtieth

That last one is the eclipse-specific one, and it is the one I would keep if you kept only one. Eclipse fortnights are famous for producing certainty that does not survive the month. Writing it down costs nothing and saves you from acting on a conviction that was really just weather.

The pause, when the song starts

When you catch yourself reaching, and you will, because I do:

Notice you are reaching. Name what you are hoping is in there, and be specific about it, because it is almost never information. Ten slow breaths. Then ask whether this takes you toward the life you are trying to build or away from it. Then choose, on purpose. Sometimes the answer is yes, scroll, you are tired and you have earned an hour. That counts as choosing.

The point was never to become deaf. Odysseus heard the whole song. He just did not steer.
