September 2026 Numerology: A 1 Month Inside a 1 Year

Written at the table in Pererenan, the second morning of September.

The light changed here about four days ago. It does this every year and I still notice it every year. The air goes thin and very clear, the rains hold off a little longer, and the whole island seems to take a breath in and hold it. I have been sitting with a small piece of arithmetic all week, and I want to hand it to you this morning, because I think it explains a restlessness a lot of us are carrying and cannot name.

September 2026 is a 1 month sitting inside a 1 year. The last time that happened was September 2017. The next time will be September 2035.

How the arithmetic works, so you can do it yourself

Numerology reduces a number by adding its digits until a single one is left. 2026 becomes 2 plus 0 plus 2 plus 6, which is 10, which reduces again to 1. That makes this a Universal Year 1. September is the ninth month, so 9 plus 1 is 10, which reduces to 1 again. A 1 month held inside a 1 year. The cycle runs in nines, which is why the gap between one of these and the next is always nine years, never a round ten.

Today, the second, is a 3 day. Two plus nine plus one is twelve, which reduces to three. Threes are for saying the thing out loud. So consider this letter me taking my own advice.

What a 1 is actually asking for

Here is where most of the writing on this goes wrong. A 1 gets described as a year of new beginnings, and then everyone reads that as permission to launch, and then by November they feel like they have failed at their own fresh start.

A 1 is not the harvest. It is not even the plant. It is the seed and the hand that puts it in the ground. The whole assignment is to begin, and to begin badly if necessary, and to resist the part of you that wants proof by the end of the quarter. Nothing in a 1 is supposed to be finished. That is a 9's job, and the 9 is a long way off.

The other thing a 1 asks for, and this is the harder one, is that you go first. Not louder. First. It is the number of the person who does the unproven thing before there is any evidence it will work, which is uncomfortable in a way that no amount of astrology will soften for you.

Your personal year is a different number, and it matters more

The universal number is the weather. Your personal year is what you are actually wearing out in it. To find yours, reduce your birth month, reduce your birth day, then add both to the universal year and reduce once more.

Mine is the twenty eighth of August. The month is 8. The day, 2 plus 8, is 10, which is 1. The universal year is 1. So 8 plus 1 plus 1 is 10, which is 1. I am in a Personal Year 1, in a Universal Year 1, in a 1 month, and I turned forty two five days ago. I have stopped pretending that is not funny.

If your number comes out at 4 or 6 or 8 this year, the month will still ask you to initiate, but it will be asking a woman who is building, or tending, or harvesting. Read the weather. Then dress for your own body in it.

What I am doing with the month

Not launching. I have done that version of a 1 and it cost me a year of feeling behind. This time I am doing one small honest beginning a week and letting them be unimpressive. A conversation I have been avoiding. A sample cut in a fabric I have not tried. A morning that starts with tea instead of my phone.

The studio works this way too, and it took me a long time to trust it. Nothing here is made in advance and stacked in a warehouse waiting to be wanted. A piece begins when someone decides she wants it. The beginning is the whole event. Everything after that is just the sewing.

A practice for the next four weeks

Write one sentence and put it somewhere you will see it in the morning.

By the end of this month I will have begun and then the thing.

Not finished. Not launched. Not proven. Begun. Then let the arithmetic do what arithmetic does, which is nothing at all, while you do the only part that was ever yours.
