A letter each week, from Bali
If this spoke to you, I would love to write to you. The Muse-Letter comes once a week: the cosmic weather, the threshold you are standing on, and one piece made by hand. I will keep your life path number with your email, so I know who I am writing to.
Welcome. Your first letter will find you soon.
How to calculate your life path number
You need only your date of birth. Take the month, the day and the year one at a time, and add the digits of each until you reach a single digit. Then add the three results together and reduce once more.
Take 14 July 1988. The month is 7. The day is 1 + 4 = 5. The year is 1 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 26, then 2 + 6 = 8. Together, 7 + 5 + 8 = 20, then 2 + 0 = 2. The life path number is 2.
There is one exception. If you reach 11, 22 or 33 along the way, you stop there. These are called master numbers. Take 2 September 2009: the month is 9, the day is 2, and the year is 2 + 0 + 0 + 9 = 11, which is kept. Together, 9 + 2 + 11 = 22. The life path number is 22.
What each life path number means
Read your own first, then the numbers of the people you love. Each one holds a gift, a piece of work, and a question to carry.
1The one who begins
You are here to start things. Ones are at ease standing alone, making the first move, saying the thing nobody has said yet. The gift is initiative and a clear will. The work is learning that needing no one is not the same as strength, and that leading includes listening. A question to carry: where am I waiting for permission I do not need?
2The one who joins
You feel what is happening between people before anyone names it. Twos are the peacemakers and the partners, the ones who make a room easier to be in. The gift is sensitivity and patience. The work is keeping your own shape while you tend everyone else's, and saying what you want before resentment says it for you. A question to carry: what do I want, apart from what would keep the peace?
3The one who expresses
You are here to give things a voice. Threes think in colour, in story, in song, and people brighten around them. The gift is expression and a natural warmth. The work is finishing what you begin, and letting the feeling underneath the charm be seen. Scattered energy is your sign that something true has not been said. A question to carry: what am I making light of that deserves my full voice?
4The one who builds
You make things that hold. Fours trust what is real: the plan, the craft, the hour put in every day. The gift is steadiness and devotion to the work. The work is not mistaking rigidity for safety, and resting before the body insists. I think of the tailors who make our pieces, one honest seam at a time. A question to carry: what am I building, and is it still mine?
5The one who moves
You learn by going. Fives need change, air and the next road, and they bring life into any room that has gone stale. The gift is curiosity and courage. The work is staying long enough for something to deepen, and telling freedom apart from running. A question to carry: what would I find if I stayed?
6The one who tends
You are here to care for what you love. Sixes make homes, hold families together, and notice who has not eaten. The gift is responsibility and a generous heart. The work is letting other people carry their own lives, and receiving care as readily as you give it. A question to carry: who looks after me, and do I let them?
7The one who seeks
You want to know what is true underneath. Sevens need solitude, study and silence the way other people need company. The gift is depth, and a mind that does not settle for the surface. The work is trusting people as much as you trust ideas, and coming back down the mountain to share what you found. A question to carry: what do I know that I have not yet trusted?
8The one who directs
You are here to learn power and to use it well. Eights see how things work: money, structure, influence, what it takes to make something large and real. The gift is capability and endurance. The work is remembering that your worth is not measured in results, and letting yourself be soft without feeling weak. A question to carry: what is all this strength in service of?
9The one who completes
You see the whole. Nines carry compassion for people they have never met, and often feel older than their years. The gift is generosity and a wide understanding. The work is letting things end, forgiving what is finished, and not giving so much away that nothing is left for you. A question to carry: what am I holding that is ready to be released?
11The one who lights
Eleven is the first master number, read as a two with the volume turned up. You are sensitive in the way a fine instrument is sensitive. The gift is intuition and the ability to move people. The work is the nervous system: grounding, sleep, a body that can hold what you perceive. Without that, the same gift turns into anxiety. A question to carry: what keeps me steady enough to trust what I sense?
22The one who builds for many
Twenty-two is the master number of the builder, a four that thinks in generations. You can hold a large vision and the practical steps toward it in the same hand. The gift is making an ideal real. The work is patience with a slow timeline, and not being crushed by the size of what you can see. A question to carry: what is the next small, honest step?
33The one who teaches by loving
Thirty-three is the rarest of the three master numbers, a six at its widest reach. It is read as the teacher whose lesson is care itself. The gift is a compassion that lifts other people. The work is boundaries, because a heart this open can be emptied. A question to carry: how do I serve without disappearing?
Is numerology real?
I want to be honest with you. There is no evidence that the numbers in a birth date shape who a person becomes, and nobody has shown that numerology can predict anything. The system used today carries the name of Pythagoras, but it took its present form in America in the early 1900s, in the books of L. Dow Balliett and the writers who followed her.
I still find it useful, in the way a good question is useful. A life path number gives you a word to hold up against your own life. If it rings true, you learn something. If it does not, you learn something too. Use it to know yourself better, never to decide who you are allowed to be.

Common questions about the life path number
What is my life path number?
Your life path number is the number from 1 to 9, or the master number 11, 22 or 33, that you reach by adding up your full date of birth and reducing it. Enter your birth date in the calculator on this page and it shows your number and the working.
How do I calculate my life path number by hand?
Reduce the month, the day and the year of your birth to a single digit each, add the three together, and reduce again. Stop if you reach 11, 22 or 33. For 14 July 1988: 7, then 1 + 4 = 5, then 1 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 26 and 2 + 6 = 8. Together 7 + 5 + 8 = 20, and 2 + 0 = 2.
What are the master numbers 11, 22 and 33?
Master numbers are the three double numbers that numerology does not reduce. Eleven is read as a heightened two, twenty-two as a heightened four, and thirty-three as a heightened six. They are said to carry more potential and more strain.
Why does another calculator give me a different number?
Because there are two ways to add. Some calculators add every digit of the date in one row. Others, like this one, reduce the month, day and year first. Both give the same single digit, but they can disagree about whether you have a master number.
Is the life path number the same as the destiny number?
Usually not. In most Western numerology the life path comes from your birth date, and the destiny number, also called the expression number, comes from the letters of your full name. Some writers use destiny number to mean the life path, which is why the two get mixed up.
