What a South Node eclipse actually is

Eclipses fall near the lunar nodes, the two points where the moon's orbit crosses the earth's path around the sun. That is why they arrive in pairs and in seasons rather than every month.

The two nodes are read differently. The North Node is associated with what you are growing toward, the unfamiliar direction. The South Node is associated with what you already carry, what is practised, and what is ready to be given away. An eclipse near the South Node is traditionally read as a pouring out.

Not loss. Pouring out. There is a difference, and it is the whole subject of this letter.

Start by looking backwards, not forwards

Here is the exercise I have found most useful, and it costs nothing.

Think back to around July 29, roughly two weeks before this eclipse. Two things were likely happening at once. Something that felt genuinely promising, a door opening, a bit of faith returning. And alongside it, something harder, something dredged up that you would rather not have looked at.

Both are relevant. Eclipses tend to take whatever was already stirring and turn the volume up. So whatever pattern was visible then is likely the pattern this fortnight is working on, and knowing that in advance is worth more than any ritual.

Nine questions

Take them slowly. Three an evening is plenty. Write by hand if you can, because it is slower and slowness is the point.

• What was rising around the end of July that felt like an opening?
• What was rising at the same time that felt like a pothole?
• What am I still holding out of habit rather than out of love?
• Where am I leading something that no longer needs me to lead it?
• What could I hand to someone else, and who would grow by receiving it?
• What version of myself am I performing that stopped being true a while ago?
• Where have I lost faith, and what would restoring it actually require?
• What am I lending my energy to, and did I choose that or inherit it?
• What would I finish this month if I knew nothing new could begin until I did?

The sixth one is the eclipse's own question, since it falls in Leo, the sign of visibility. If only one lands, let it be that one.

Why I am not telling you to manifest

You will read the opposite everywhere this week. That August 12 is a master manifesting day, that the portal is open, that this is the moment to script and set intentions.

I do not agree, and I would rather say so than be fashionable about it.

An ordinary new moon is a real beginning, and an intention set then has room to grow. An eclipse is not that. Eclipses tend to arrive with endings and with information that changes the shape of decisions you thought were settled. Committing to something inside that window means committing while the ground is still moving. Not dangerous. Just early.

What to do with your hands instead

Release is easier when the body has something to do.

Finish one thing you have been circling for months. Return something borrowed. Send the message you have drafted three times. Clear one drawer, not the whole house.

And leave your hair alone on the twelfth. Eclipse days are rest days in the lunar calendar, which for once means the traditional advice and the practical advice agree.
