Healing Was Never About Doing More

For a long time, I believed that if something in me was struggling, the answer was to try harder. Add another protocol. Another supplement. Another discipline to grit my way through. I have learned, slowly, that this is almost never true.

These mornings begin with warmth and quiet now, not a list of ways to fix myself. That shift did not happen all at once. It happened the year my body finally made me listen.

I thought the answer was more

A few years ago, my thyroid started asking for my attention. And like so many of us, I heard the request and answered it with force. More restriction. More supplements. More pushing through. More trying to fix myself into submission, as though my body were a problem to be solved rather than the place I actually live.

Building a business and raising two children under ten in my forties does not leave much room for a body that is constantly at war with itself. Something had to give. So the healing had to become as non-negotiable as everything else I was holding.

“Healing was never about doing more. It was about doing less of what drains me, and more of what nourishes me.”

Doing less of what drains you

Here is what I know now, after all of it. Healing is not about doing more. It is doing less of what drains you, and more of what nourishes you. That is nearly the whole of it. The rest is detail.

It sounds almost too simple to be true. But the simplicity is the point. The body does not want to be conquered. It wants to be listened to.

The basics you can actually sustain

The real healing did not arrive through anything extreme or expensive. It came from the basics, the ones I could actually sustain across a whole life, not just a disciplined week.

Protecting my sleep as though it were sacred, because it is. Eating enough protein, and enough plants. Moving my body gently, instead of punishing it. Saying no to what depletes me. And saying yes, more often, to sunlight, to stillness, and to the people who feel like home.

None of it is dramatic. That is exactly why it holds.

You do not need to fight your body

If there is one thing I could hand to the woman still at war with herself, it is this. You do not need to fight your body. You need to listen to it.

“You do not need to fight your body. You need to listen to it.”

Your forties can be a powerful decade. They have been the best years of my life, so far. Not because everything got easier, but because I finally stopped treating my own body as the enemy and started treating it as the oldest friend I have.

Notes from the healing path

A few small things have made a real difference for me. I offer them the way I would to a friend across the table, not as instruction. My body is not your body, so take what is useful, leave the rest, and always speak with the practitioner who knows yours.

Dried apricots, quietly one of the best sources of iron. Pumpkin seeds, rich in magnesium. Red light therapy, which has worked wonders. Easing off the long saunas and hot yoga, which my body did not want, at least not in this season. Black seed oil, a small miracle. And a little castor oil on the belly button at night, which has been a genuine change for me.

On the ordinary days, I let what I wear be part of the nourishing, never part of the draining. Soft things. Clothing made slowly, that asks nothing of my body except to be at ease inside it.

If this found you on a hard day, keep it somewhere close. And if you know a woman who is still trying to fix herself into submission, send it to her too.

With love from Bali,
Myrah
