The Perla Skirt

The Perla Skirt is a light silk and cotton skirt with hand woven lace along the hem, hand stitched in Bali. It comes in two colorways, Perla White and Dark Moon Black, and choosing between them is most of the point.

Light and dark, and a whole life spent learning that they were never enemies. They are a pair of hands. You cannot hold anything with only one of them.

So the skirt was made twice. The same silk cotton, the same cut, the same lace, in the white and in the black, and they do not read as the same garment at all. Perla White is the pearl. Dark Moon Black is the water it came out of. You will already know which one is yours, and that knowing is the polarity doing its work.

The lace

The lace along the hem is woven by hand. Not applied, not machine made, woven, which is why the pattern does not repeat with perfect regularity and why the next one will not match this one exactly. It is the slowest part of the garment and the reason the skirt reads as elegant from across a room rather than only up close.

The silk and the cotton together keep it light. Silk carries the light, cotton keeps it honest and keeps it cool against the skin. It moves when you move and it settles the moment you stop.

Where it came from

It was drawn for a tea trip. Mayra was travelling to Taiwan with Global Tea Hut, and she wanted something she could sit on a floor in for three hours, rise from without rearranging herself, and still feel properly dressed for a ceremony in. Everything about the cut comes from that one requirement.

It is hand stitched by the artisan families who have made for this house since the beginning, each of them paid a real living wage, never a factory garment. Silk and cotton, no synthetics, as with everything we make.

Worn alone it is the quietest elegant thing you own. Worn with the matching jacket it becomes a whole way of arriving.

The matching jacket

There is a Perla Jacket in the same silk cotton, a front wrap cut from the same tea trip. Take the skirt on its own, the jacket on its own, or the two together as a set using the option above.

Colorways

Perla White is the pearl, a white with warmth inside it rather than glare.

Dark Moon Black is the water it came out of. Same skirt, same lace, entirely different woman wearing it.

The honest note

The lace is hand woven, so it varies. Small irregularities in the pattern are the mark of the hands that made it and not a fault, and no two hems are identical.

Silk relaxes rather than creases. Keep it out of long direct sun, which is the one thing silk will not forgive. Cold hand wash or a gentle cycle in a mesh bag, hang to dry, do not wring. Take particular care with the lace.

Made in small batches, so when a size is gone it may be gone for a season.

Common questions

Which colorway should I choose?

Most women know within a few seconds, and that instinct is usually right. If you are genuinely torn, Perla White reads lighter and more ceremonial and Dark Moon Black is the one you will wear more often. They are the same skirt and they are not the same decision.

Can I add the jacket?

Yes. Choose Skirt + Jacket in the option above and both pieces arrive together in your size and colorway. The jacket is also available on its own.

How do I care for the lace?

Cold hand wash is kindest. If you use a machine, put the skirt in a mesh bag on a gentle cycle so the lace has nothing to catch on. Hang to dry out of direct sun and do not wring it.

Is it see through?

The body of the skirt is not. The lace at the hem is open by nature, which is what lace is, and it sits at the hem rather than anywhere that needs covering.

Everything we make is handmade in Bali by our artisan families, in small batches and to order. 

Whether your piece is waiting in the studio or cut for you after you order, it is finished, checked and packed by hand, so allow 3 to 6 weeks before dispatch, with botanically dyed pieces toward the longer end. 

Once your order leaves Bali, transit is 5 to 15 business days, and tracking reaches your inbox within 5 days of dispatch.

Duties and taxes are collected on arrival. Since August 2025, most US orders carry a DHL duty charge, and VAT or GST applies in the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

If a piece arrives and the fit is not right, or it arrives damaged, you have 10 days from delivery to exchange it. We issue store credit rather than cash refunds, and the piece needs to come back unworn, unwashed, unaltered, with tags attached. Return shipping is yours unless the piece arrived damaged or incorrect.

Pieces customised for you (made to your measurements, in a custom colour or altered to your request) are final sale, because they were cut for you and cannot belong to anyone else. Sale items, anything bought with a discount code of 25% or more, and anything bought with store credit are also final sale. Made-to-order pieces in our standard sizes and colourways can be exchanged.

Orders can be cancelled within 24 hours of placing them.
