Day Out of Time and Nyepi: Designing Your Own Annual Reset

The Edit · Ritual & Culture

Two Ways to Pause Time

two cultures, thousands of miles apart, arrived at the same idea: some years need a day that doesn't count.

What is the Day Out of Time?

The Day Out of Time falls on July 25th every year, a single day set outside the 13-Moon calendar's count of thirteen 28-day months. It was established in 1992 by José and Lloydine Argüelles as a Green Day devoted to forgiveness, creativity, and planetary peace, immediately preceding the Galactic New Year on July 26th. It asks nothing practical of anyone. No shopping, no logistics, no goals. Just art, reflection, and a clean slate before the count begins again.

What is Nyepi, Bali's Day of Silence?

Nyepi is the Balinese Hindu New Year, observed according to the Saka calendar, and it is considerably stricter. For 24 hours, the entire island stops. The airport closes, no flights land or depart. Streets empty. Lights stay low, noise stays minimal, and residents and visitors alike are required to remain indoors. It is preceded by Melasti, purification rituals performed at the sea, and the Ogoh-Ogoh parades, in which large demon effigies are paraded through villages and then burned to dispel negativity. The day after, Ngembak Geni, marks the relighting of fires and rituals of forgiveness between neighbours and family.

  Day Out of Time Nyepi
Origin 13-Moon Dreamspell calendar, created 1992 Balinese Hindu Saka calendar, ancient tradition
When July 25th, every year Saka New Year, typically March
Core practice Forgiveness, creativity, reflection Silence, stillness, self-introspection
Rules None enforced, entirely personal Island-wide, legally enforced: no travel, no lights, no work

What these two reset days have in common

Neither day is really about the calendar. Both are built on the understanding that a nervous system, and by extension a culture, cannot metabolise growth without an occasional full stop. Both precede a new beginning rather than following one. Both centre forgiveness as the mechanism that clears space for whatever comes next. And both, in their own ways, ask that you slow down on purpose rather than waiting for exhaustion to slow you down for you.

the years that hold a real pause somewhere inside them are the years that don't quietly break you by December.

How to design your own annual reset day

You do not need to belong to either tradition to borrow the structure. A workable framework:

  • Choose one date each year, tied to something meaningful, a birthday, an equinox, the day a chapter of your life closed.
  • Decide what the day will not include: no phone, no errands, no obligations to anyone but yourself.
  • Build in one act of forgiveness, written, spoken, or simply held quietly.
  • Choose what you wear on purpose. Something that asks nothing performative of your body, that lets you sit in silence or move slowly without a single seam fighting you.

This last piece matters more than it sounds like it should. The Kundalini Gown Original is the piece I return to on my own reset days, the very first garment this collection was built around, off white, bamboo rayon, cut for stillness as much as for movement. A gown for the days that ask for nothing but presence.

Frequently asked questions

When is Nyepi celebrated in Bali?

Nyepi falls on the day after the new moon of the spring equinox according to the Balinese Saka calendar, typically in March. The exact date shifts each year.

What happens during Nyepi?

For 24 hours, Bali observes a full island-wide stop: no travel in or out including flights, minimal lights and noise, and residents and visitors are required to stay indoors. It is preceded by purification rituals and effigy-burning ceremonies, and followed by a day of forgiveness and relighting fires.

What is the Day Out of Time and when does it fall?

The Day Out of Time is a single day, July 25th every year, set outside the 13-Moon calendar's monthly count, established in 1992 as a day devoted to forgiveness, creativity, and planetary peace ahead of the Galactic New Year on July 26th.

Can I create a personal reset day even if I don't follow either tradition?

Yes. The underlying structure, choosing a date, clearing it of obligation, and building in reflection and forgiveness, works independently of any specific calendar or belief system.

With love from Bali,
Myrah
