Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, Trauma, and the Quiet Power of Knowing Yourself

The Edit · Odyssey

He Came Home Still Carrying It

one more, and then I really will stop talking about this film.

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey opened on July 17. I have been turning it over ever since, and not for the reasons I expected.

What stayed with me is not the sea or the monsters. It is that the story does not end when he reaches the shore. He arrives, and he is still carrying what he brought back with him. Twenty years of war do not stay behind on the boat.

The homecoming is not the end of the work

This is the thing the myth understood three thousand years ago that we keep having to relearn. Reaching the shore is not the same as being home. There is a whole second labour after the arrival, which is becoming someone who can actually live there.

I think most of us know this in our own smaller way. You leave the marriage, or the job, or the country, or the version of yourself you outgrew. And then you find that arriving somewhere new does not automatically make you new. You brought your patterns with you. They came in the luggage.

healing is not the removal of every painful memory. it is being able to remember without being ruled by it.

What the film is careful about

Nolan draws the lotus into Odysseus's own story in a way Homer does not. In the poem they are separate: Calypso holds him in Book 5, and the Lotus-Eaters appear in Book 9, where it is his crew who eat and he has to drag them back. The film brings those threads together into one psychological landscape, and scholars have read the lotus there as relief from what he saw at Troy.

Which makes the lotus a very precise metaphor. It does not heal him. It just turns the volume down. And turning the volume down is not nothing, sometimes it is survival, but it is not the same as integrating what happened.

Where knowing yourself actually comes in

Here is where I want to be careful, because this is exactly the point where a lot of wellness writing overreaches.

Self-knowledge is not a treatment. Astrology is not a treatment. If what you are carrying is heavy, if it is trauma or depression or something that has its hand around your throat, that needs real support from someone qualified, and nothing on this page is a substitute for it. I would not want you to read a blog post instead of making the call.

What self-knowledge does offer is something more modest and genuinely useful: a language for recognising your own pattern before it finishes running.

Because most of what undoes us is not dramatic. It is the same loop, arriving in a slightly different costume, for the fortieth time. And you cannot interrupt a loop you cannot see.

Your sun sign as a starting sentence

I am not going to tell you the stars determine your life. I do not think that, and you would be right not to trust me if I did.

What I have found, over years of using this language with women, is that a chart works like a good question. It gives you somewhere specific to look. Your sun sign is the simplest entry, and it points at something real: what you are here to develop, what you reach for under pressure, where you tend to overcorrect.

The eclipse we just moved through fell in Leo, the sign of being seen. That is not a coincidence I can prove anything with. But it did give a great many women a very specific question to sit with this month, which is whether they have been performing a version of themselves that stopped being true a while ago. A question like that is worth more than a prediction.

Use it that way. Not as a verdict on who you are. As a first sentence you get to argue with.

And then the older calendar

The other thing that helps, and it costs nothing, is getting back onto the clock that existed before the one in your pocket.

The moon does the same thing every month whether or not anyone is watching. It builds, it fills, it empties, it goes dark, it starts again. Nothing in that cycle is in a hurry and nothing in it is broken. There is a reason nearly every tradition that has ever kept a calendar built one around it.

What being in rhythm with that offers is not magic. It is a reminder, delivered nightly, that emptying is part of a cycle and not a failure of one. When you are in a dark-moon stretch of your own life, and everyone else appears to be full, that reminder is worth a great deal.

Go outside at dusk. Notice which phase it is. That is the whole practice. If you want the version with dates attached, our lunar calendar keeps it for you.

What I would actually do with this

If the film left you tender, and it left a lot of us tender, three things, in order of how much they matter.

  • Name your loop. Not the story, the pattern. What do you reliably do when you are frightened, and what does it cost you
  • Find one language for it. A chart, a therapist, a journal, a friend who tells you the truth. The language matters less than having one
  • Get on a natural clock. Sunlight in the morning, the moon at night, one thing that is not a screen

None of that removes what you are carrying. That was never the offer. The offer is that you get to know its shape, and something whose shape you know is far less frightening than something you cannot name.

Frequently asked questions

What is Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey about?

It follows Odysseus, king of Ithaca, through his long attempt to return home after the Trojan War. It was released on July 17, 2026, and stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope.

Does The Odyssey deal with trauma?

The story has long been read as being about a soldier returning from a long war and struggling to come home to himself, not only to a place. Nolan's film draws the lotus into that psychological reading, treating it as relief from memory rather than as a separate adventure.

Can astrology help with trauma?

No, not as a treatment, and it should not be presented as one. Trauma deserves qualified support. What astrology can offer some people is a language for noticing their own patterns, which sits alongside proper care rather than in place of it.

What does your sun sign actually tell you?

It describes the position of the sun in the zodiac at your birth, and is traditionally read as pointing toward what you are developing, what you reach for under pressure, and where you tend to overcorrect. It is best used as a question rather than a verdict.

How do you live more in tune with natural cycles?

Start small and physical. Daylight in the morning, noticing the moon phase at night, and one daily stretch without a screen. Following the lunar cycle gives an existing structure to work with rather than one you have to invent.

He does not arrive healed. He arrives home, and then does the long, unglamorous work of becoming someone who can stay there.

That is the part worth taking with you. Not the sailing. The staying.

With love from Bali,
Myrah
